I didn't have time to ride much during the hectic holiday season, so I mainly rode my own horses (they are more fun) but today I worked the Appaloosa mare that I am fostering for a rescue. For the first time ever I got through the whole ride without having to use the halter rein to haul her around - I did have to do some pretty crude steering with the bit a couple of times when she suddenly decided she had a better idea for where we should go. She is lazy but has a good ground-covering walk and a big, airborne trot. Her canter, however, is non-existent, more of a disorganized gallop. I think I may try to work on it more on the longe hoping she will find her balance sooner without a rider. I keep reminding myself that the more I teach her the more fun she will be to ride - yeah, right!
yes right! She must have remembed your work from before. You never know what they recall. So many horses don't seem to know much so your work with her will benefit someone later on.

What is her disposition like? She may be a good, lazy trail horse for a person who doesn't want to get anywhere fast. It does sound like you are making progress with her. That's good. Is she the only foster you have right now?
I have three other fosters but one is a pony not started under a rider and too little for me and the others are retired racehorses that are not quite sound and are looking for "pasture ornament" homes.
The mare is lazy but once moving has big gaits. I do think she would be a good trail horse as nothing much seems to bother her, and for a somewhat experienced rider, she is quite comfortable to sit on. She is also registered, if that matters to anyone. Several people have shown interest in her but no adopters yet.
We're getting colder weather and rain too. I have had to do some fencing to be able to move some cows, so I haven't ridden anything for the last several days. However there is a possible adoption in the works, and the last time I rode her we had no major steering lapses, so things are looking up!

That is great news! We have not been able to ride either. I started doing a good cleaning of both sides of the barn hall we can ride in there in early Spring but it has been bitterly cold the last few days so I feed and come back to the fire.
