Sometimes, growing Cannas in a pot can be very beneficial, depending on your climate. It's also easier to find them when it's time to store in the fall/winter.

Canna mostly prefer to be uniformly moist, and some don't like to be drenched, so knowing what soil and pot to use is important. Check your soil after a week of drying out, and if it's still wet, then you need to add perlite or peat moss to keep it from rotting the rhizomes.

DOUBLE POTTING:

Some examples of pot growing are the popular double pot, where it can sustain a more evenly moist soil without being waterlogged.

First, select a smaller pot (6-8" is a good size) and a larger pot (12" for example, if using a 6-8" inner pot) that will hold enough soil to surround the entire pot with at least 2 - 3 inches of soil.

Step one: Place a mixture of sand, fine ground lava rock, and heavier garden type soil about 1/3 way up the larger pot.

Step two: Changing the soil mix to include less lava rock and sand and increased soil will help maintain a uniform moisture, as the sand and lava will drain faster. Cover pot with soil - slightly below level with the soil of the inside pot and cover inside pot with about 1 inch of new soil mix.
Remove and drop in about 1/2 inch of sand on the bottom only of hole. This will help any excess water drain from the bottom of the inside pot quickly where rotting could occur.

Step three: Drop back in smaller pot. You should have an even final appearance with the soil levels, and can be patted down to even out. Any unevenness could result in dry out.
