The roots (rhizomes) benefit greatly by removing them during the dormant period if they are not allowed to dry out in the soil. Division can easily be done during this time.

Dividing Cannas can be done by finding an erupted 'node' where new growth can produce a new cane and several live roots are found in the same area. Usually, it's best to include at least 4 inches of rhizome with roots intact, and good results can occur when planted right away after division. Always use paraffin or fungicide on open wound to prevent infection from soil exposure.
