A while back Coconut requested a thread of just general converstation, and chicken chat. Why not I love getting to know the friends and just general conversation. Just share or ask anything. Haystack This is a modern game roo that thinks he's my son, I'm not kidding he screams if I put him in any pen with any birds or even alone. He follows me everywhere I go. I have several of these and he is the only one that is like this. He's really weird...Hay

Hilarious! How funny!! and cute!!

All of mine follow me around when I go outside. They stand at the door looking in too, which reminds me of the dogs because they're the same way!!

This past month, we've been doing some blackberry picking. When I look behind me, there they all are following along! And the dogs will pick the berries right off the branches and eat them. Which cracks me up even more! But the chickens prefer to chase grasshoppers in the field... and then go to the garden to get some fruits and veggies!!

The hens are just now getting to where I can feed them out of the hand a little bit.

Hi Annie: It's always such a pleasure talking with you. Sometimes you just find that one bird that won't leave you alone. A few days back I was working outside and it was hot, I laid down on the lawn and fell asleep, when I woke up maybe an hour had passed and the gamerooster was snuggled under my chin sound asleep also. When I would put him back with the girls he would screetch, so finally I ended up taking one of the girls in the house with him and I would hold both of them together while I watched the news. Three or four days later they became friends and then when I put him in the cage with them he was alright and now they are all in love and I can get my work done...lol...Hay Bless you Annie.

Eufaula: I love that pic with your little one and you on the quad, what memories that invokes. There is a place in Georgia, called Eufaula, is that where your name came from. It's quite pretty...Hay

Why Thank You Haystack! The little one is my Granddaughter and she is my little "Wild Child"!
As for my name.. It happens to be my Grandmothers Name. She was named by her Father. As the story goes , He named her after the "Prettiest" person or place he ever knew. With deeper investigation it turns out that it was also a reference to our Natchez/Muskogee (Creek) heritage. Eufaula was a very important Creek town , which is now a city in Alabama. Its meaning , I am told, means laughing as She runs.

Oh, I'm still here - enjoying my 8 little 12-week old Rhode Island Reds. I have quite a wait before my first egg, but these little things are so entertaining that even without eggs, they're pretty fun.
Here they are the first day I got them at 10 days old.

This was their first time outdoors, 19 days.

First experience with a hanging cabbage, 18 days. It didn't take them too long to figure out how to jump up & get a bite.

Enjoying some free range time, 35 days. There is a small fish pond behind them & once they spotted the goldfish, I had to rescue 3 of them from the water.

And here they are 3 days ago, almost 12 weeks old.

Still here, just starting to get eggs from the babies I got in August, so you might not be waiting too long for your RIR's Jo-Ann, especially since you don't have the frigid temps we do. ;)

Melissa, thanks for the info on your RIRs. About how many weeks old were your chickies when they started laying? I've read everything from 20 weeks to 28 weeks. of course, the sooner the better. My DH's birthday is April 19th & I was hoping to have some of our own eggs for his birthday breakfast.

I just love taking pics of the dear little things! Here's their coop & run.

The right side door is covered with plastic for the winter, but it will be just hardware cloth once the weather turns warmer.

Cute Coop!

I don't have RIR's... my babies are Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks and a Wellsummer. BUT your RIR's should start laying soon!! They're fairly early maturing birds, you'll definitely have plenty of eggs by Hubby's birthday! You might have eggs for Valentines Day. ;)
