I have a sick hen, she is just a baby and hasn't started laying yet. We keep her and her brother in a large wire dog pen at night, but during the day we've been letting them out in our coop with a few of the other chickens.
This morning I went down to the chickens and found blood all over the baby's pen! Neither seem injured, but the hen is moving very slow and seems to want to sit in the corner.
It looks like it might be blood stools (diarrhea), although I didn't see her do anything.
Of course, it's a Sunday and the co-op is closed and I don't have any meds on hand.

Could this be cocci? Or maybe her first egg is stuck? She's a very small bird...
I feel so bad for her, her brother is cuddling next to her and they usually stay side by side 24/7, I hate to think if we lose her.

Should I try cayenne pepper in yogurt? I put some extra water and some bread in the cage, she did come and eat a piece of bread but then went back and sat in the corner.

Oh, the blood is bright red.

Hi Cheryl. I got some sulfamet (I think that's the right name) and it cleared them up right away, whew! Her and her brother were both sick, and they're just fine now. It really worked fast.

Thanks!
