| Hi, I'm so glad to have found this cubit! I desperately need some advise. A couple of days ago I bought an on-line Windows 7 home premium from Sofware-Hotbuy. http://www.software-hotbuy.com/ Normally this company sends you the full retail box with free shipping all over the world. But I got a mail where they told me sending it to Belgium would be difficult because what they call the Belgian Customs hard to deal with.. copy of the first mail Quoting:----- Original Message ----- So instead they offered me Windows 7 Ultimate without extra cost but an online download version. I thought that was OK so I agreed and asked for the registration key. It took three days before I finally got it after sending two more request mails. A strange thing is that my security system considered the mail with the registration key as probable 'Phishing' mail, a bit scary! So I went to their website and used the contact button to send them a mail with a copy of the 'suspicious' mail asking if it was safe. I got a quick reply from the same person Vivian who was using the mail address of Olivia Smith, the mail had some Chinese characters in it too ?? So I got even more wary about it.. I did a search on the web to find out if there were some negative reviews of this company but couldn't find any. Another thing is that Vivian calls me 'my dear friend' in the other mails, a bit weird too I thought? I had also asked if I had to uninstall Vista before I download the Windows 7 Ultimate online version. She said yes I had to remove Vista first. Fortunately I didn't found out how to do when I dawned to me how can that be having no physical installation disk, I wouldn't be able go on internet without an operating system?? Besides I don't know how to delete the Vista, its not listed with the Sofware being an operating system.. So I have two issues here that trouble me; - my suspicion towards this company maybe no one can help me with that - How to install Windows 7 Ultimate without having to uninstall Vista. I'm afraid to uninstall it, I probably wouldn't be able to reinstall it if things go wrong as the Vista came installed with the computer and I have no installation disk nor registration key.. Is it possible to have two operating systems ? I hope I'm not sounding too confused and thank you so much for your patience! |

This is screen shot from the mail with registration key (I have taken out) with the strange Chinese characters (enlarged) they don't come out when I simply copy it..![]() |

| My friend found out something even more suspicious My Paypall receipt says I have paid to a company with two Chinese caracters, not the name of the company Sofware-Hotbuy! ![]() |

| Myriam, do not uninstall your operating system! I'm afraid you have 'been had' as the saying goes! Installing their system might give them control over your computer, I haven't checked their site but from what you have said this is definitely a scam! |
| I tried to look at the link to the site you gave, it could not be found! Do you remember the scam site I found when I was going to buy Regcure? There was no home page, and their terms and conditions (found in a small link at the bottom) provided no guarantee that it would work so I knew it had to be a scam although they were offering either a download or a disc for a little extra. It was at the bottom of the first page of a google search, but another time I checked the link wasn't there any more! |
| Thanks Janet for your reply! Thankfully I haven't uninstalled Vista yet! Strange that the link to the home page of the Software-Hotbuy site doesn't work for you, it does for me?? I'll try it again from the Google UK page; http://www.software-hotbuy.com/ |
| The link does work now, and it does look authentic! I'll do a search to see what I can find out. Strange thing I noticed at the bottom of the links on the bottom of the page, it told me my IP adress number! |
| Yes, it does look genuine! Hence my confusion! I also noticed my IP address number at the bottom! I didn't find any negative reports about this company on the web too! |

| Myriam, It's possible its a genuine download of Windows 7 Ultimate. But the Chinese are notorious for bootlegging programs. This website sounds like they took you. Main reason being the switching of the media. If they were to send you a DVD of Windows 7, you could most likely tell it was counterfeit. Thus the story of the Belgium customs. If you paid by credit card, call and ask the charges to be reversed if it makes you feel better. If they offered the full install of Windows 7, you simply download it and burn the image to a DVD. Then install 7 from the DVD. But make sure you make a copy of your Vista. That option should be available to you in your Programs menu. Look on the website of your laptop mfg to see how to do it. But back to http://www.software-hotbuy.com/ Registrar: XIN NET TECHNOLOGY CORPORATION Whois Server: whois.paycenter.com.cn Referral URL: http://www.xinnet.com Name Server: NS1.SUPERDNS.ORG Name Server: NS2.SUPERDNS.ORG Status: ok Updated Date: 01-may-2010 Creation Date: 16-nov-2009 xinnet.com had one of the worst reputations of a registrar as far as spam and other illegal activities last year. |

| Thanks John! Yes, they did offer the full version, but I am afraid to click on the link to the download, what if it is a trick to invade my computer?. My friend has contacted PayPal for an investigation of the company, they have that option when a site is suspected of phishing activities, I'll see what they say and I think I might get back my money, hopefully! The scary thing is that the homepage of Software-hotbuy looks so genuine and many people might fall in the trap! Thanks for the advise to make a back-up of Vista, I didn't know that was possible! |

| It seems Paypall cannot do much about it, and its true, they are offering the product and did give me the key. So maybe I'll try to download it anyway..that seems to be the only way to find out if its genuine. I would like to ask if it is possible the dowload it in another computer, an old laptop I have, that has no real private content so not of interest for eventual phishing, burn it on a DVD and then install it in the computer its meant for? |
| Myriam, first check the requirements for Windows 7. If your laptop has sufficient RAM, processor speed etc. then there's no reason why you couldn't try it. You would first need to completely remove the OS on the laptop, so make sure you have saved anything on that computer to another medium e.g. DVD or external memory that you might want to keep. |
| Thanks, Janet! Oh I didn't know I first had to delete the OS on the laptop only to download not installing! It's cofusing as I asked 'Vivian' of the Software-Hotbuy site how it needed to be done after I've written a mail how I possibly could install the Windows 7 online if I had no more OS. She has replied with excuses she didn't explain more clearly, and said I first had to do the download, then delete the Vista and only then install Windows 7.. |
| Hmm, I think you might be able to download but I thought you were going to try installing. Reading what you have been told sounds very confusing! If you download, then remove the OS you already have, how will you be able to install the new one???? I guess it means downloading, burning the Windows 7 to DVD, then removing the existing OS but I would first try to burn that to DVD just in case! Once you have the new one on DVD you can then install it after having deleted the old one. It all sounds risky to me, what if it doesn't work? |
| Yes, Janet it sounds risky but if I download it in the laptop there is nothing to lose as there is nothing worthwhile fishing in there ..? Here is the last mail of Vivian on my question how I could install Win 7 when I first had to uninstall Vista.. Again considered as a phishing mail by my security system! Quoting:----- Original Message ----- |

| My thoughts were that it might not burn correctly onto a DVD! You can't have two OS on a computer, as far as I know. Make sure, as I said above, to burn the existing Vista onto a DVD. I'm not sure how to do that, or if it's possible. The worst scenario is you manage to burn both OS (Vista & 7) to DVD, then neither of them work for some reason. That's why it's always a good idea to buy a computer with an original back up disc of the OS and all other programmes which are on the computer. Dell always loads them all onto the computer and sends the discs as well. Good luck ;) |

| I googled to see if it's possible to burn Vista to a DVD, found a site with instructions but it's for a download version. It might help! http://www.raymond.cc/blog/archives/2007/04/17/how-to-burn-d... I wonder if there's instructions for burning Windows 7 too.... |

| That all looks difficult, there is also the problem of udates which you might not get. Read some of the comments on the link in my last post, the same problems might apply to Windows 7. Lots of advice and problems on youtube... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzuXGFqKMq8 Read this about burning a downloaded version, people having problems.. http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/5130799/Microsoft.Windows.7.... |

| EEEEkkk, that all sounds toooo complicated for me being technically and computer illiterate! |
