| Does anyone here have an iPad? If so......like??? Not like???? I've been *looking* (translation......probably gonna buy, just haven't bit yet....... Ok, now this is a REAL stoopid question.......do you have to pay for apps? I guess I've already decided that I will NOT get the 3G one, sure ain't gonna pay what they're asking for the service. I'll stick with the WiFi since I have a wireless router in the house (boys wanted internet up in the shop for their laptops). And if I'd go anywhere, vacation, etc. I think most hotels have wireless anyway. I'm trying to figure out how much storage I need, tho........32??? 64??? since I have no idea there either how much it "holds" for each. I guess I could better understand if I knew how much that translates into my Kindle.....says 1500 books capability. Thanks for any input. I wish I was more tech/electronic savvy. I even had to get the guy to come and program my TV for Dish, for crying out loud. |

| Anna -- My DH is also looking at them.... But he'll go top of the line, because he needs that 3G thing for the summer months. As for storage, addage is - get the most you can afford, same for memory. [i honestly can not recall what the options for RAM was on these things] did a quick google for free aps -- this article looks decent http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/ten-top-free-apps-ipad/ here is another article that lists the best 45 free aps http://technologytosoftware.com/must-have-free-apps-for-ipad... when I was on Apples site a while back [looking up stuff for DH] i noticed many aps for $4.99 each. but obviously free is the way to go. they [the Ipad] looks pretty snappy... but me, i need a full laptop. | Don't want a laptop.....want something to put in my oversized purse. Ok, another dumb ??.........what do you NEED the "apps" for........like, the Kindle app. Need it to get Kindle books on the iPad, I assume..........so once you have the app......either free or purchased, is it "yours" for life? Or a fee, like every year. (I told you I was dumb) |

| Anna -- I'm honestly not familiar with any of this stuff. [my kids have "I" products, just not the Pad] my beset guess is... the free products/aps are yours to keep, and the ones you'd purchase would be yours after they are paid for, like regular software. as for what aps you would need... that would be completely up to you. i'd think... google [every mans best friend] an ap for weather, something like Kindle, if you like to read games - if you are into those... I guess you'd just have to look around to see what you think you'd like to have. go to Apple's site and see what aps they have available...though i'd bet they dont have any free ones. and browse the internet for free aps that you think you'd like to try. I;'m guessing there is a way to delete them if you dont like them. Terese -- Itasca, IL & Lake Delton, Wi My Email is my userID at hotmail.com |

| I have saved that about the iPad from that site.......will probably have to read it more than once. But, I gather from what I have read so far that this was posted much earlier in the year; like perhaps just shortly after they were released. There was mention about something "coming in April". And I think it meant April of this year, not '11. |
|
|||
| Ahh, i didn't check the dates on the articles. I have read 'somewhere' that Apple will be coming out with an Ipad2 sometime next year... i think i read 'spring', but then someone in the article said that it probably wouldnt be out that soon.... found a few places that said release should be April-ish of 2011 Terese -- Itasca, IL & Lake Delton, Wi My Email is my userID at hotmail.com |

| Hmmmm.........maybe I should wait and see what the "new and improved" will have........ |
|
|||
| If it were me... i'd wait. Depends on it you "need" it right away,,,, like your current computer died... or you are just looking for a new 'toy'. from what articles have said... it will be the same size, but more resilient screen and lighter in weight. | "Need" doesn't even enter into the picture. |
|

| Just got back from town and Radio Shack.....got a gift there for SU.....anyway, I asked the guy if there was gonna be a "new and improved" iPad.....he said yes, in Feb. The ONLY new thing will be a camera so you can "do" Skype or some such thing like that, plus, he said, maybe a couple of new apps. Don't know if I care about the camera or not. Hmmmm.........'tis a puzzlement........... |

| Hi Anna, I am the proud owner of an iPad and can answer any questions you may have about it. I am a lead service desk analyst for VMware, a company that creates virtualization products. I use my iPad to access my View client along with instant access to e-mail and the internet. I do not have the 3G and if you do not foresee being out of range of a wireless hot spot, you do not need 3G and can save yourself some money. When it comes to apps, there are many that are free. Further, nearly all have a 'lite' version which allows you to try it out before buying. I run WYSE Pocket Cloud which allows access to my work View session. It is awesome. Further, I have the Stargazer app along with some apps for my son. The iPad can be whatever you want it to be. When it comes to storage, I opted for 64GB as I have a lot of files I want available at any given time including a selection of my favorite MP3's. If you do not have a lot of media, you could get away with 16GB. There is an online service called Dropbox which gives you 5GB of storage for free. There is also a Dropbox app for both the iPad and your desktop (whether it be Mac or PC). I use the Mac version along with my iPad version and I can drag and drop files into it. Reading books on your iPad is actually not the most ideal. You can get free Kindle and Nook apps among others but because of the back light, it defeats the purpose of reading on a portable device in my opinion. I also own the Nook and use it exclusively for my reading. The black and white, non back-lit e-ink format replicates a real book nearly perfectly. You can read it anywhere even outside. If you try reading a book outside on your iPad, you will be quickly disappointed. I have gone on for a bit here but I will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Ipads are handy, nifty devices and they can do SO much. I am also a photographer in my spare time and the line 'there is an app for that' really holds true. I have two photography type apps. One tracks the direction of natural light and provides exact direction of how and where to place the camera at certain times of day to get the best light for the shot. I also bought a depth of field app that give me the focal range of my subjects based on certain criteria. All the best, Ben |

| Wow, Ben, that's alot of infor for a pea-brain like me to assimilate. I guess the biggest question is would I be better off getting one now or waiting till the newer ones come out in a month or 6 weeks? I wouldn't use the camera deal on it, I'm thinking. I have already decided that I am NOT going to pay $$ for the 3G deal hookup. Like you said, getting to be lots of wi-fi around if I carry it "wherever". |

| Hi there Anna, Not a worry. I did go on a bit there. I am a huge technology fan and the iPad is one device that is truly and uniquely exciting. According to my sources at Apple (they are one of our customers), the release date of the new iPad is pure speculation. The functionality will not be different from the current device apart from the camera. The only useful purpose for a camera (in my opinion) would be for video conferencing or video chat. It would make a rather awkward device to take still photos. I guess the main thing you need to ask yourself is what you will use it for. For me, I need a quick, easy way to connect to my virtual environment. The iPad is great for that. I also need instant access to e-mail and a browser on a decent size screen. I use the Blue-tooth Mac keyboard with it so I have a portable writing device whenever needed. There are also excellent games for the device if you are into that sort of thing. Have you ever wanted to have a portable device for gardening? Here is an app for that: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/garden-plants-database/id3324... All the best Ben |

| Ben, thanks for stepping in with such great info! Terese, thanks for your input as well! Anna if/when you get an ipad, I would be interested in your thoughts after you have used it a while. |

| Santa brought me an iPad so I've had it just a couple of days. And I've never used an apple product so that's a double whammy. Still exploring this gadget. I asked my son, who is a computer genius, where|how I could create a document, and he said "Mom, don't think of that as a small PC. Think of it as a big phone. It's my iPhone, only bigger". At least for now, this is a fun toy. But it really isn't a computer. E.g. It took me forever to type this post. I bought atomic web for an ad block@ 99 cents. Also uses tabs which safari didn't seem to do. Karen I got one free app for weather. It's awful;all obnoxious video ads. Not using it. Much better one in my regular web browser @ weather.com I bought an ad block app called Atomic Web. Works well. It also uses tabs which basic safari didn't seem to do. Karen |

| In above post, my the bottom of my preview page kept hiding the end of my post. Hence the weird Repetition This is not computer! Karen |

| Karen, you made me chuckle! I hope it goes better for you soon. |

| Hi Karen, While it is true, this is not a small PC or netbook, it isn't an enhanced version of the iPhone either. The first thing I recommend for anyone buying the iPad is to get the stylus as well. Those fingerprints are a pain to keep cleaning off and with a stylus, you have more control of how you type. The one most recommended is from Boxwave. Even with the stylus, composing anything that requires a lot of typing can be frustrating -- particularly if you are a proficient typist/keyboarder. I am a touch keyboarder and it took less than a week before I had to buy the blue tooth keyboard. If you couple the keyboard with a decent case that has a slat in the back where it can rest in an upright position on its own, you have a decent mechanism to proficiently type on sites such as this and/or e-mail. Safari doesn't come with tabs but if you tap the icon that looks like two squares on top of each other (to the left of the book shaped icon), you will notice you can open up to 9 different windows for different sites. There are apps for document creation although none are really fully mature yet. That should only be very temporary. Goodreader is a decent app worth checking out. Here is the summary from their website: Quick summary: super-robust PDF reader with advanced reading, annotating, markup and highlighting capabilities, excellent file manager, TXT file reader and editor, audio/video player, Safari-like viewer for MS Office and iWorks files. I personally have not tried it but have seen it installed on other iPads and looks pretty decent. As mentioned before, I tend to work almost exclusively in a virtual desktop so for me, my iPad really is a miniature PC. If you want to see a bit of what the company I work for does, you can view the video on this page: http://www.macstories.net/ipad/vmware-view-client-coming-to-... My virtual desktop environment is set up by my company on a dedicated server but how I envision this working for the average consumer is perhaps some software that would install on your desktop, a small amount of configuration and then connecting with the iPad. I mention all this to illustrate my overwhelming excitement over the infinite possibilities and capabilities of this device. Does anyone here like Scrabble? There is an iPad app called Words with Friends and if you fancy playing, my ID is BennysPlace. |
