I took a basic sewing machine class in Sept. '09, then a 4 week (one day a week) quilting class in Oct. '09. To date, I've finished six quilts, including the one from the class, and have five more either in progress or on the boards to start. Guess I can be considered a new quilter at this point. STU

PS, below is my first quilt from the class.

Welcome Stu! You still consider your self a new quilter? You're a pro, that first quilt looks wonderful. My MIL is a huge quilter and we have quite a few of her quilts here at our home, a couple she made specifically with us in mind, one was for our 10 yr anniversary.

I CAN sew....but even still consider myself a beginner. I've made a duvet and lots of curtains for the house....all pretty simple stuff lol

I'm pretty big into lovebirds and have plans to make a shoulder 'activity pad' for tame lovebirds. So I'm mostly into the crafting aspects Smiling I will say I am grateful for my sewing machine that was also given to me by my MIL.

Would love to see your other quilts!

Nice, I love both of those, who doesn't love things made from old jeans. I bet t eh jeans add some 'weight' to it, too.

lmao The duvet that I made was for a king down comforter...I was after durable and used a very heavy, I guess it would be called a twill, very close to denim...and very heavy! We did use it for years, but in the end having to pull so hard to get it where we wanted once we got in bed ended up tearing the baffles in the comforter Crying Still have it though- love the colors.

I am thinking of making a quilted duvet cover. any ideas on how to do this anyone?! I am a very very beginner on quilting. have sewn up 9" square blocks to make a quilt, but never really did any designs on a quilt block.

I'd like a quilt for our bed, but we have a feather comforter we use year round. So I'm thinking a blocked duvet cover, but then if I quilt it it would be too heavy to use year round?! any suggestions?

Boy AnnMarie, I love that you want a quilt over the comforter, I hope someone can help. My only experience with a duvet is a cautionary tale.....very heavy fabric, pretty much made it unusable for a duvet :(

Anjl, I mostly make duvet covers as my hands just don't have the strength for quilting any more.
For many other reasons I prefer duvet covers....easier to wash, easier to make, no quilting to do, much better for kids, my college age grands drag theirs back and forth all the school year.
I make mine with pieced tops so they look like a quilt. I buy flannel sheet sets when they are on sale, usually in the spring. The top sheet makes a perfect back for the duvet cover, it's very cozy. Then there is a matching bottom sheet ans pillow cases. putting a duvet cover together is just like making a big pillow case. Hem one end and leave open, sew the other three sides together. On the open end I make button holes in the pieced side and sew buttons (1 inch or bigger) to the back (flannel) side. You can make the open end the top or bottom, whichever you prefer, I usually do the bottom. On the larger sizes the inner comforter sometimes wants to shift. What I do for that is buy twill tape and cut pieces about 10 inches long. I sew them inside the duvet cover at each corner and in the middle of each side and the top. I then also sew the same to the comforter. Putting the comforter inside the cover is easier if you have 2 people. Reach in to the top corner and tie the twill tapes form the cover and comforter together. Then do the same for the sides and bottom corners. Give the whole thing a good shake to even it all out and there you are. I hope all this is clear but if not I'll be glad to answer your questions as best as I can.

Hurray! and yes its clear! thanks!

I have a duvet cover here that is made similar to how you described, I think with your description and my working model here, I might be able to do this LOL!

I like the idea of the twill ties. I have those hard plastic things on my duvet that hold the corners....hate those things! especially when DH tosses the covers aside and whacks me in the face with the corner Blinking Hilarious! Thinking maybe I can add some ties to my feather comforter and toss those plastic things in the garbage where they belong! LOL

Best part is in the morning, you just give it a shake and your bed is made.
