This is to help out Anjl to feed and support all these horses. We will be making a quilt to help raise funds.
We will be making either a horse appliqued block, or a pieced block in your choice of block, but let's keep them all earth tone colors please? It will help make the finished quilt look better. Browns, tans, blacks, grays... Please make your blocks to be 12 & 1/2 inches when finished.
Thanks to all of you for signing up.
Hi Linda, I hope all is well with you and all the 'sisters'!
I have been super busy here at home and not had much time for internet, much less cubits lately I need to start allocating more time to crafting too, or I'll go bananas soon Hubby and I just started 2 new companies...his & hers kinda thing and I've been busy setting those up, plus doing lots of volunteer work.
Which is the reason why I am writing to you. The place I volunteer at is ReHorse Rescue Ranch. You may have seen my many posts on facebook about them Basically, it is a non profit org started 3 yrs ago on Raquel's home/ranch. With all the foreclosures in our area due to the mill shutting down, there were many horses that owners were forced to abandon because they could no longer afford to feed them, or they were forced into an apartment with no room for them, etc.
Raquell has a big ranch, and an even bigger heart she started taking in unwanted horses and finding homes for them. The need was so great that she became a non-profit org and quit her full time job. Now, the need is even more great. Along with her current fosters, last year we took in 10 starving and neglected horses from one owner and we are struggling to keep up with their food/vet bills. Thankfully the news reporters kept us on the front page and we received a lot of attention, which kept the donations poring in. Then 2 weeks ago, Animal control seized another 15 horses from another ranch, we are housing 6 of those horses bringing our total to 48 horses. Even with the news stories, in the last 2 weeks we have only received $150 in donations for these new charges. (Raquel says that doesnt even reimburse the gas it cost us to go get the horses!) All 6 horses are about 300 lbs under weight, and the previous owner was breeding them...2 are carrying foal in this condition!
ReHorse is in desperate needs of $$ to keep up with the food and vet bills. Though there are several groups that are forming to do some fundraising, the $$ still isnt enough to feed all 48 horses. These horses are sooooo sweet! I really enjoy the time I spend cleaning up their pens, brushing them and just scratching them and giving them lots of
So now to my point. I had a brain sprinkle and thought that maybe the Sisters would like to make a quilt and donate it to Rehorse Rescue Ranch http://www.rehorserescue.org/ then we at re-horse can either raffle off the quilt, or offer it as a 'prize' to the largest donor for the month..etc to raise some funds for these sweeties. Can you run this whole thing by the Sisters of the Heart and see if its do-able? I am certain that I can even get the Sisters of the Heart's name in our newspaper out of Sacramento which would also bring their BIG hearts into the public eye to let people know just how wonderful they all are!!
and Thank you Linda soooo much for posting this! I sure hope we can pull this off! These horses are so sweet and wonderful. It breaks my heart to see the condition that they are in Only the latest 6 are in bad condition. The other 42 horses are all rehabilitated now and just waiting for their forever homes
Some photos so you can all see why my heart breaks for them

I do some squares whatever you need Linda are you organizing ? Can I republish this story? I have a freind on Fb that travels all over the world to do something with horses maybe she will have some thoughts?
I'd be more than happy to contribute as many blocks as you need Linda. Just need you to tell me whatever you need. I wish I could handle putting it all together but I can't make that committment until I know what is going to happen health wise. I'm so up in the air right now....But blocks and fabric donations I can do!!!!! My grandson rides and I was soooo proud of him - at his awards banquet, he received the trophy for sportsmanship. Along with many others but this one really made me glow!!!! Just let me know what you need.....
Probably the best way would be for people to make a sandwiched block just like they are doing with their coffee cups. That way one person can put those prequilted blocks together in a flash. We could send them all to Anjl and she can sew them together using the fun and done way. She'll have it ready to deliver in a day. That's super easy and we have a tutorial if she needs one. We could use the fabric we already have for our coffee cup blocks and the back and sashing would be scrappy or we could ask for backing donations and all use the same back.
I saw free horse patterns both for piecing and appliqué. If we do it like this the work and the cost is shared. Anjl will have her quilt in hand as soon as she sews them together.

That sounds like a great idea to me Seray!! I'm sure Anj can stitch it together she is very crafty Of course I dont know the difference between a peanut butter sandwich and a cup block one but what the hey!! Ill sandwich it up!!
That sounds good too! If some don't feel comfortable putting the pieces together, they can send the front and back pieces, and the batting if they have it.

Probably so, with all the horsey folks. It will bring more in.
Put me and Charley in, I have some horse fabric and I know I've seen horse quilts.
let us know please....
I have the names of those signed up, in the top. We have 9 so far. Anjl, how about giving us some direction please? Would you like this to be all horse fabrics? Maybe a panel for the center, and browns and blacks around it?
