by Bryan ArnoldWelcome to the Sisters of the Heart Summer Project. This is a very special quilt for a special person. Below you will see some of the correspondence from Carol Megathlin. She is coordinator for 3rd ID Adopt a Soldier program in Coastal GA. She's responding to my request for someone who might benefit from one of our quilts: Sherri, I received a heart-wrenching note a couple of days ago from the wife of a 3rd Infantry Division veteran. He is relatively young and was working on a Bachelor's degree in history when he was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. His wife works at the same college in Savannah as my husband. Her name is Theresa. His name is Barry. Theresa wrote to me - we have never met - to ask if I could ask people to send Barry cards and letters, letting him know he is not forgotten. She takes him to intensive chemo every other week even though she still must work (but she is on intermittent medical leave to care for him). I'm telling you about this because of a note I got from her this morning, an answer to the question: What can we do to help? You will see why I'm letting you know about this: Carol, Here are some ideas that I have that might be helpful to him. Barry really likes Hershey's chocolate bars and might like some homemade chocolate chip cookies. He also likes hard candies such as peppermints, root beer barrels and butterscotch. He drinks hot chocolate, ginger ale and cups of soups. Maybe if someone has the means and the time they might be able to put him together a small care package. He probably would enjoy getting something like that. He cannot eat raw vegetables and fruits because of the cancer. He is very cold all the time because of the chemo and the blood thinners that he is prescribed. If someone likes sewing or quilting it would be nice to make him a special quilt or throw to take with him to chemo. I am trying to keep help him keep his spirits up. He is used to working all the time, and he was pursuing his Bachelor's in History before he got diagnosed and has had to stop doing both. Our family is in Pennsylvania, so we do not get to see them as much as we would like, but Barry does talk to them during the week. I think as long as we can have people with positive influence around him and supporting him in any way we can it will help keep him positive. His chemo is the most aggressive treatment that they have and it leaves him weak and sick. Just knowing that people care enough to support us with their caring, love, and prayers means a lot to us. I know that we need help with lawn care. He is trying to cut the grass a little at a time and it is wearing on him. Someone in our church is supposed to help with that, but they have not been able to do that yet. Again, thank you so much for caring. Theresa If you would like to make a block for Barry let me know and I'll add you to the sign up sheet. Our quilt will be a Fun and Done quilt. We need 15 121/2" blocks. Your choice of style, pieced or appliquéd. BOM blocks are welcome. If they're too small then maybe you can add a border. If you could personalize it for them with well wishes I'm sure they would appreciate it. We won't contest this time but will have some fun along the way. I'll be putting it together so if you need my address please send me a Cmail. If you would like to add some goodies to his package cards or candy then please send them with your blocks. The deadline for the blocks will be April 6th. Main Rule! Have Fun! 1. Seray 2. Susan 3. Christine 4. Charleen 5. Sassafrass 6. Kathy 7. Audrey 8. Misti 9. Robin 10. Magga 11. Barb 12. Jaye 13. | I'll send one of each of the three patterns (you likely don't need 2 of anything, as no one else will, I guess). This is a great start, and I've sent you the suggestion I had for the backing - a nice buttery/sunny yellow! |
|

| Sherri - I've labelled them, put them in an envelope, and addressed it. I'll take it to the PO tomorrow, and you should have the blocks soon. I did one of each of them, and if you have enough blocks for the quilt and want to keep one, do so. Don't send it back to me - the labelling is good for either Barry's quilt, or whatever you want to do with the "extra". |

| I emailed Carol to let her know we are making Barry a quilt. I told her how wonderful you all were in responding so quickly and so wholeheartedly! I also emailed Teresa to introduce myself and to let her know we are making Barry a quilt. I'll share that when I hear back from her. So we are officially on our way! Plenty of room for more! |

| Here's what I sent Teresa and her reply: Hi Theresa, My name is Sherri and I'm a neighbor from Richmond Hill. I received an email from Carol Megathlin asking if my online quilt group, Sisters of the Heart, might be interested in making a quilt for Barry. She shared your story with me and I shared it with my group. Well needless to say they responded splendidly and we have whole heartedly adopted you and Barry. We are making him a special quilt. Each person will send me a quilt block and as I get them I'll quilt it. When they are all finished I can quickly put it together. They will include cards and candy as well so maybe a little care package just to add icing on the cake. Since it will take us a little while to do the work I thought that instead of waiting to see the finished product I would send you a picture of each block after it's quilted. If you have a computer at home then Barry can see the quilt under construction and know we are thinking of him daily. We have already purchased the quilt backing. It's a sunny yellow, just right for summer. The batting is cut and waiting for the blocks to arrive. They will be coming from all over the US, from Canada and Iceland. If Barry has interests that we might represent with our blocks, fishing, sports etc we might just be able to incorporate that into a block or two. We're looking forward to wrapping you both up in our quilt. Sincerely Sherri Here's her reply: Hi Sherri, This is wonderful. I know he will be so excited. Unfortunately, our computer has bit the dust at home and we are unable to afford a new one right now. I am going to try to check out a laptop from the library at the university where I work and take it home for a few days, so I can complete our taxes. I was in the middle of them when our computer decided to finally go. I can print out the blocks for him to see each day from computer at work, too.. I try to take things home for him to look at and read, so he does not feel so isolated. Barry loves going to the Jacksonville Zoo and visiting the animals there. He also loves dogs. We have a bulldog named Shirley, who is his companion while I am at work. He also enjoys football. His favorite team is the Pittsburgh Steelers and his favorite player is Palamahou( not sure I spelled his name correctly). He also enjoys visiting St. Augustine in Florida. His favorite color is blue. He also enjoys the beach and the ocean very much. Thank you all so much for reaching out to us. I know he is going to be very excited. Have a wonderful day. T Maybe that will give you some block ideas. |
