One form that I am starting to like more and more is the miniature form - these little guys carries some big punch with some of the newer ones coming out.
I have made some future crosses and will know this season if I want to pursue the mini's.
This cross produce one mini and I will know this season if it will stay or go...
That seedling is soooo cute, Lyle! I think the mini's are adorable and I've tried to build a little collection of them. I think they are absolutely adorable, and I have two beds beside the steps to our upper back yard that are raised up to where the flowers would be sort of near eye level when they bloom -- and now I just have to wait for all the little goodies! And I do hope this one proves to be a keeper for you, at least for breeding potential.
Thanks Betty - The first thing I think of when looking at minis or smalls is the foliage in relation to the scape height. This seedling has short foliage and a short scape with the bloom above the foliage that makes it within the standards I would work with.
One thing I appreciate about them is Space. If you do not have a lot of room but like variety you can fit so many more in an area than the Big Ones. I love the Mini's but not too many are pushing them like the big ones.
The minis do give a bit more variety in a small space. Another nice thing about minis, when you divide you will have some great boarder plants. Also: when showing daylilies minis make a nice addition to your entry.
Lyle I have the following mini's they are so cute Little wildflower, siloam tom thumb, eenie allegro, iddy biddy gal, little missy, nacogdoches bing cherry are some of my smaller ones I have about 35 daylilies 3 inches and under, but only about 10 9 inches and over...
If only my photo taking was better and the rain would let up..... We have had sun for two whole days and they are calling for rain..... and thunder and lightening but the cold is finally gone .... and the daylilies are opening slowly.... Pictures to come soon!!!Heather
The first thing to know about the miniature form is you just don't miniaturize the flower but the whole plant, this takes some time.
Here is a clump of BROADWAY ELF next to AWESOME ARTIST you can see the difference in the foliage, BE has a 16” scape, 2.75” bloom so you can see the foliage on BE makes it very attractive an only about 11 inches the same bloom on AA would be blooming about halfway up the foliage.
BROADWAY ELF next to Awesome Artist
I will continue this thread with some more of my thoughts on minis.....
Wish I could find BROADWAY ELF somewhere, but so far I haven't found it. Guess I should put it on my wish list on the LA. Last night I went through my records and wrote down all my mini's and smalls by DIP or TET, and now I have to get all the Tets I want to use up out of the ground and in pots. But I have lots of Dips to replace them with, so the beds will still be fine. I think there are six or seven at most that I'll have to dig up. But you'd be proud of me, Lyle -- I have developed a plan! And I can see where it will probably take a few to many crosses to get to the right size, both in bloom and plant.
I'm curious about pods on minis -- they must be small, so are the seeds smaller or are there fewer seeds per pod than with regular sized pods?
This cross created a small bloom on the first cross and could be taken to another mini like Spacecoast Tiny Perfection - which has a nice short foliage'
MISSISSIPPI EARL WATTS – Has a 6” bloom.
