Where is everyone? In the past several days the forum has been awfully quiet so I'm wondering where everyone is. Just checking. Ears perked up!

I did that this a.m. and last night. It's WAY too hot and I'm smart enough to stay in where it's cool during the heat of the day. Hilarious! If I watered my plants in mid-afternoon I could have them for dinner tonight as they'd be boiled it's so hot. Instead I'll wait 'til the sun goes down then water.

Actually, I do most of my watering in morning and evening, too. During the day, I just move the sprinkler around.

There are times when I have the hose running on "trickle" and leave it on or in a pot so that the water soaks in. After 30 minutes to sometimes an hour I'll go out and move it to another container but seldom if ever to I manually water any of my plants during the day. As much as I don't like evening watering due to disease it's not always feasible with the number of containers that I have to avoid evening watering.

I am home. As usual it's so hot that you can't really enjoy the coneflowers or any flowers. I dug up a coneflower that was in the block planter and one that was in a 7 gallon container. Those two aren't looking so good. I replanted them in 6" pots and brought them in and put them under my grow light in airconditioning.

Vicki, coincidental that you should mention digging up plants that don't look so good. I purchased Sombrero Salsa Red two weeks ago and put it in with some other established plants in a 30 gallon tub and it has never looked good. Over the weekend I noticed that it was wilted and looked like it needed a drink but the potting mix was already moist so I assumed it was heat related and left it alone thinking that it would perk back up. Today it was still wilted so I took the drastic step of digging it up and looked at the root ball. Amazingly the original potting mix was barely damp even though the soil in the tub was plenty moist. I removed all of the soil and potted it up into a small 8" pot with fresh potting mix and moistened it thoroughly. Maybe I should bring it inside and plant it in the fall. I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who takes such drastic and almost unheard of steps. Thank you. I tip my hat to you.

Youch. You could try to conver the exposed original soil with your mix... Might help with the loss of water.

So what do you do with you pots in the winter?

With the exception of my small pots last winter which I overwintered in my unheated garage all of my "tubs" stayed put and I didn't do anything. The small pots contained Gaillardias and some other miscellaneous perennials. Those pots are 2 - 3 gallons and I'll probably do the same this winter for them. Having said that my question is more: Will 1 gallon sized potted echies overwinter in either a south exposure or an unheated garage? Most of my pots are 1 gallon nursery pots like you find at Lowe's. Many of those will need potting up before winter because they're near that size now. However, there will be some that can stay in 1 gallon pots and I wonder if they'll make it in zone 6b. It won't be a terrible loss if they don't survive but I'd like to give them a fighting chance. None are anything more than unnamed cultivars and will probably merely bloom out as purple coneflowers.

I have the same problem and I am watching the forum, you have to either post or click watch when you find a new thread. I just don't have time to go through them all and look for new ones, I have been busy working so much overtime. Sad
