Deabeties runs rampid in my family and I know all the diatetic suggestions for how to eat etc. I was wondering if anyone knows of any natural herbs and things like that which are suppose to help keep your blood glucose levels in range? Do you have or know someone who has personall experience with this or is it something you read?
Cinnamon - I know this one helps... From my books I find that Beech, Blue Cohosh, Golden Seal, Indian Hemp, White Pine, Poplar, Dandelion root - several say this is one of the best treatments. Blueberry Leaves (also highly marked) and blueberries have great marks.
All of the above with a good diet and work out program will help with all the issues.
I have many family members with sugar issues, some on meds, others well past basic meds.... the herds above can all help.
This all sounds good an more than worth a try. With my family it is not Z"Will I be diabetic?" but "WHEN will I become diabetic." I am on the edge now as it is. My doctor has labeled me border line diabetic and my nutritionist labeled me Reactionary Hypoglycemic. Anything I can do to hold this disease at bay will be a good thing.
Thank you Melissa, good point there! I'll check out that site too. I know my sister gets a lot of info from deabeties.org. I have a hard time reading too much at once so sometimes it is better for me to just ask a pointed question and get a direct answer.
I have to say, I've been taking cinnamon for over a year now, and it has done nothing to control my diabetes. I'm type 2. I just went to the Dr. yesterday looking for another solution. I was so disappointed. Was taking to capsules a day. I'm taking 2000mg per day.

I'm sorry to hear that Alan. I think some people's bodies get to a point where nothing helps other than medical intervention. So far I have held things at bay. I am not diabetic (yet) but am "pre-diabetic". Most of the time I am just fine but then all of a sudden I'll have a week or so where I have several lows (no highs). I have my dr. baffled with that one..
I have had diabetes for several years now. My heart Dr. was the one who recommended trying the cinnamon, so I was surprised when it did not work. I'm on glyburide and metaformin now. Dr is recommending we try Byetta, which also helps patients loose weight. Has anyone taken this drug yet? It is not insulin, but it is a shot, instead of a tablet. Some of the side effects do not sound pleasant either, so I'm a little squimish.

I took Byetta for a year and it did not keep my diabetes in check. Started on 5 and went to 10. I'm now on metformin 3 times a day. Hard to get in the regiment of 3 pills a day. Elaine
Sometimes I wonder if any of the meds help our diabetes. I get so frustrated some times. Go to the Dr. next week to get training on giving my self shots of the Byetta. I have two friends who are taking it. One for two years, and has lost 40 lbs, one who has only been taking it a few months and has lost 20 lbs, both say they really like it, and it is keeping there sugar in check. So now Elaine, your experience wasn't good. I'm at the point I'll try anything, but getting so tired of having such fluctuations in my sugar. Mostly high, which is real bad. So frustrating!!!

Reading your comments is helping make me determined to lose the weight the dr. says I need to lose and do all I can to keep from jumping over that fine line from "pre/borderline diabetic" to simply diabetic!
LOL Alan, yeah, I guess I didn't use the appropriate word there did I? Enough people in my family deal with all of the same stuff you are all talking about that I should know all of this. Nobody really discusses it much though and it's good for me to hear this side of things.
I am working at the weight loss. Probably not as hard as I should but I was down by 2 lbs at my dr. visit 2 days ago.
I've lost 10 lbs in about 5 months. This new drug, byetta though not designed to, has been discovered to block fat from the food we eat from being digested, and instead passing through the body, and thus diabetic's are loosing weight. Sounds good to me. Hope it works for me.
