That sounds like a good guess on the pepper. I don't know of any varieties that stay green when fully ripe, unlike tomatoes, so you probably had seeds from an immature fruit.
I've had a few bell peppers that hold the fruit upright before. It must just be an odd mutation.
I'd think you could make jam with the berries, since it's getting cooked anyway. I froze a bunch of berries last year and used them in sauces and smoothies, but didn't have enough for jam to be worth the trouble.
