hi!
how about more 'how to's' for new farmers. My hubby and I plan to buy land in the next 2 years and build a farm to become self sufficient. We have no idea where to start =( other than buying the land and animals. so I have lots to learn over the next 2 years.

any how to's from growing produce, milking cows, making cheese, canning harvests etc would be wonderful!

Annmarie, come up with some specific questions and take them over to the questions forum here:
http://cubits.org/farming/forums/view/farmingquestions/

Stan says to warn you that he grew up on a farm, has been farming for 38 years and still doesn't know all the answers!

Dear Kathleen, as the owner of two cubits and one that is very busy may I offer some suggestions and help.
When cubits first opened a lot of people jumped on it thinking things would come to them, it doesn't as owning a cubit is hard work, to say the least!
You basically own and run a mini web site, that will only do what you tell it to do, within reason. A lot of cubits are now 'dead' as people suddenly realised that it is hard work.
So some help from me I hope. Firstly get a decent Banner, and centre it. You do not need lots of the same over the top, as most people just glance at it, they want to know what is inside the cubit.
Unfortunately you have nothing on the top of each forum to even say what that forum is about, or a quick list of the forums like an index at the top which people can click on easily to get around.
Remember some people don't want to go to the right hand side box to click on a forum, and they get lost, especially if there is nothing on the top of the forum box to tell them what it is about.
Your Right hand side box can hold a lot of information, so try to use it. A classic mistake is not to answer posts, people do not take kindly to that. It is like a friend posting a normal letter and you get it in your normal snail mail box, and you do not answer it. I am not criticizing in anyway at all, just trying to help.
Try a voting Booth they are on your control panel and people like to have a bit of fun voting on something funny, anything that you can think of that is relevant.
Have a photo contest\competition, you can offer a small prize or not it is up to you. People love to show their photos off if there is a prize or not!
I am fully aware that you and everyone are busy at this time of year, in fact in never stops. But the more you do on cubits the quicker you get at it, like anything.
Articles! I have seen some awful ones on cubits with pictures everywhere, and text that is not spell checked or anything. There is no spell checker when you write the body of an Article. So copy and paste it to a word processor package like Word and spell check it, plus the Grammar. You do not have to cut and paste it back to your document if you do not wish, as you can flip from your word processor to your document and correct it!
Make sure all pictures are of a good quality and keep it simple. The best cooks and gardeners in the world keep their food and their Gardening simple.
Don't forget what you see on your computer screen is not what everyone will see on theirs. For instance i have a 27' iMac which is great, but I can write an article on here and it looks great. When someone tries to read it on a small laptop it goes everywhere and is terrible.
Look at this for some of the things that are wrong! Pictures and text everywhere!

That does not look good, it is not professional. Don't forget every Article the whole world can see!

Good! Some suggestions. I was afraid it was going to be like Woody Allen's mass meeting to protest student apathy at which three people turned up.
I liked the farm pictures - professional or not. The "what did you do today?" I think a pictorial farm tour or even chore tour could be fun. And I have always enjoyed Kathleen's informal narratives.
And 1AnjL, the main thing you need to know about farming is that you have to REALLY want to do it.

Dear Porkpal, I agree but any help is better than none. Have a look at this for a City farm in London! http://www.hackneycityfarm.co.uk/

porkpal, I was kind of afraid of that, too.

Neil, I've skimmed your first post and the suggestions are all good. Some of them may be beyond my present skills at this, but I have been maundering on and hope to get the look a bit better. Summer keeps getting in my way!

what I was thinking of was a form that we could just let folks know what we are up to.I sure don't fit in dairy 100 New Zealand white rabbits and expanding 10 nanny goats and 40 pure breed chickens along with another 30 barnyard specials that roos will go to the freezer and Elle will use rest for laying hens for egg sales only
Edited to say I love to read about the dairy because my roots came from general farming and milking and cattle were just part of it

Be yourself, you can be no one else
I've been lax about posting. There really isn't a lot happening here. The neighbor's sheep and beef cattle are in our pasture now. My garden is producing, I'm watering, weeding, canning. There is a sameness to the daily life on any farm, a dozen days in a row of the same thing such as hauling hay, or planting, daily milking twice a day, etc. Busy seasons do get in the way.

I think trying to help a new farmer wannabe get started would be a good forum. Also the voting booth, a weather forum too where we could say how the weather is affecting what we did or plan to do.

So many different climates, crops, animals, ways of doing things, working farms or hobby farms, etc, should give us a lot to talk about. I'm guilty of not even looking in very often, and sometimes I read and don't add anything.
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

Kathleen it looks like your request is working; people are coming out of the woodwork!

Oh yes, and I'm still shredding pastures and spraying fencelines. Sameness is a good word.

Hi I am Neils wife, he asked me to have a look at this cubit before he did anything to it. Now he has not quite finished as most things need playing with. Rolling on the floor laughing
It looks a lot better and I do like the collection of Banners he is making, they look so much better when they are your own pictures than some of the ones you see on here!
Keep him at it, he will not let you down.

Kathleen he loves to help people out! He also loves to take the mickey out of me as I use windows, and when it goes wrong he always says the same "should have bought a Mac."
Trouble is he bought me one, a laptop and it never goes wrong, which is no fun as I love fiddling with windows problems as that is what I do at work.
How can you do a girlie thing and fiddle with things if it works perfectly all the time. Rolling on the floor laughing
Men do not understand at all do they? Like he irons everything and cooks lovely food, but why can't he make a mistake so I can get my own back on him. Hilarious!
Living with a perfectionist is not easy, especially one with a memory like an Elephant and a scientific brain.
Neil told me about your dad, hope he gets well eh!
Group hug
Sarah.
