That's wonderful, Kelli, and so true. I especially like the line about needing the least!

Excellent Kelli. I will share that with my email list. Did you post it at The Gathering Place? It would be good there. Thanks.

Here are some more of those irises for you, Sharon. The variety is "Delft Blue".

Locally, these are called freeway daisies. I don't know what the "real" common name is.

Today was cold all day. The weather fforecast said we would have 56 or some ridiculous figure. Ha! It was more like 36, rainy at times, snowing other times, and always with wind. I helped my neighbor get the barn ready for lambing, but we only got part of it done and 3 pens ready for newborns. He still has to finish pouring cement around those posts, got one done yesterday and could see how many more bags of sackrete he needs to finish the job. What we cleaned and straightened today is enough to get us started with the early arrivals. And not a minute too soon either.

We got the little trailer hooked to the 4 wheeler, fastened the top back on it because the trailer had another job this summer, and then while Paul got the hot fence up to make a lane for the sheep to go from their pasture to water and the barn, I went out with the lambmobile to check the flock. Surprise! I really didn't expect to find anything. The little guy was pretty nimble on his feet and already dry, so we are guessing he might have been born early this morning.

I did not volunteer to go check the flock tonight, but I see it coming soon, so I will enjoy sleeping whole nights while I can. Paul will tell me when he wants me to start.

Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

I love the woodpecker with the little red spot on his head and the daisies with the dark centers. I have never seen any like that before. Do they grow easily and all over the place, like along the freeways, in your area? Wonder if they could survive a colder climate like zone 6b.

Enjoy your sleep tonight Mary. I hope your temps will stay on the warmer side for the sakes of the new lambs. Paul didn't believe in working on the lamb areas any too soon did he? Talk about split timing!!!! Like most guys I know, he probably figured him timing was JUST right.

Kelli...thank you! I also love the daisies and like Elena, never ever saw dark centered daisies.

You better get some sleep Mary....I predict some sleepless nights ahead.

Be well, Elena. I'm missing you.

I am here Sharon. I am just like everyone else and am running in circles. Sometimes I feel like a dog chasing his tail however and seem to get nowhere before it is time to start over. I have so much stuff I need to get cornered before the outside stuff begins. I think we are getting old because we can't seem to accomplish nearly as much as we should these days. I would go look in the mirror to see but I don't think I can stand the shock. My kids are hinting at the fact however. Course.......what do our kids know that we haven't taught them? Confused

I was wondering the same thing about the daisys, would they live here, and would they become a nusance? I have avoided California poppies for that reason, although I do enjoy driving through White Salmon, Washington, a town on a hillside with retaining walls overflowing with California poppies, some sprouting between rocks and others growing in the gravel beside the road. The town is decorated like a Bavarian Village and I think they probably have an Octoberfest. It's quite picturesque. I've not driven through it later than about August. When I see the places where those poppies grow, I think I had better not plant them. We have enough invasives, some of which I planted myself.

The problem with the neighbor's timing is that there are too many projects and too little time. He started on the repairs to the barn posts several weeks ago, but then his other projects took priority, things like a broken water line near the house, and an irrigation line he was using to supply water to his cattle sprung a leak, a big leak. His daughter got married, and those festivities and the visiting relatives took some time, and then the daughter and son in law went on a week long honeymoon trip, and he had no help at all. This is typical. That's why I asked him if I could help him get ready, because I knew that some night we would have a bunch of newborn lambs and nowhere to put them! I sure hope he gets the other 2 posts cemented in soon and the cement mixer and other tools out of the barn.
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

The freeway daisies are planted along freeways sometimes. They are very vigourous here. They are one of those things that are pretty up close but kind of blah en masse. They are native to South Africa, so I'm thinking that they are probably not very cold hardy. We have the same climate as parts of South Africa, so anything from there goes bonkers here.

Thanks Kelli. The blah enmass factor would put them out of the running in my beds. I have enough stuff that looks blah part of the time and think it would be a big mistake to add more of those. Jo, I couldn't help but laugh at your comment about invasive plants. Years agp I knew a lady who couldn't seem to keep any plants alive. She became an expert at silk flowers. She would run out one night and place silk tulips or silk daffodills in her little beds and they would look stunning from the road the next morning. She said they didn't cost her any more than all the stuff she had to buy for real plants.
