Ring neck snakes live under the concrete floor of our garage. I've learned to not be concerned about them. Larger snakes I get upset about. Ring necks only get about 6"-9" long.

Kelli, which nursery had the Delft Blue Dutch Iris?

I have never seen a ring necked snake and didn't even know there was such a thing until I saw that picture. I don't ever kill beneficial snakes but sometimes carry them to the woods because I know that my neighbors will kill them.

Leaflady, I got the Delft Blue iris from a mailorder place, Peaceful Valley Farm Supply http://www.groworganic.com but I have seen it other places, though I don't remember where. It might have been packaged by the "Easy to Grow" company http://www.easytogrowbulbs.com/index.asp I don't know if they are nationwide, but nurseries out here carry their stuff. You'll find the iris bulbs for sale in the fall.

Ellen, I'm sure it doesn't surprise you that I kind of like snakes. One time we had a really cool snake on the porch. I think it was called a coachwhip. It was pink, like it had sunburn. I only saw it once.

Actually, I am not a snake lover when it comes to the dangerous ones but I never kill a non-poisonous one. They are very beneficial in the garden and do no harm whatsoever. It is just the few moments from the time I see the tail or the tip of the head suddenly emerge when I am weeding that gives me a brief pause to decide whether to have a heart attack or not. Blinking Confused

Welcome Cinda. I am glad you came out of lurking long enough to let us get acquainted with you. I hope you will continue to post now that we know you. Love that little snake. If they stay little and cute like that and don't have diamond shaped heads or rattlers I can live with them just fine. I guess those little fellers must eat bugs or tiny critters, huh? They might be benificial garden helpers if that is the case. Jo, I think you are safe with this one. Sticking tongue out

Thank you for the welcome, with the weather warming up I will be out much more ...so that leaves less time for other stuff. When it is winter I often find myself looking at others garden pictures it helps pass the time till I can get back out.
I often wonder if I would like it where one could garden year round? then I would probably wear myself out Smiling
I think the snake is a brown snake.
The only rattler we have here is the Mississauga and they stay in or near water. I too have been curious about what a snake that small eats.

I think if I could garden all year long I wouldn't have my dear on-line friends so I guess it is a good thing I have to be inside so much in the winter. I am like you in the fact that I am not online as much when the weather is wonderful. Mostly I am on at night since I am a nightowl and don't wander around outside at night in our busy area. Probably if I lived out in the country I would be gardening by outside lights. Big Grin
I hope you will make our cubit one of your regular stops whenever you are online. Thumbs up

Hmmm..... I'll bet you never expected this to become the snake forum. Hilarious!

Here are a couple pictures from Saturday.

A couple guys out motoring, but I don't know anything more about it. You see all kinds of vehicles in Malibu.

old road grader - I was told one time that it was probably horse drawn. If this picture doesn't scream "The West", then nothing does.

Does the snake have a red ring around its neck? If so it is a ring neck garter snake. I don't think it will get much larger. They eat crickets, roaches, etc. We have some who live under the concrete floor of the garage. One was out on that warm day we had last week.

Anything that will eat roaches is a friend of mine.
