I've been learning a lot too, first year was NOT good. My sister wants all gourds I can grow, hoping I get another finished one in return.

I take it she does some type of gourd art? I am new to this, I know there are tons of things you can make out of gourds but I haven't a clue "how to" any of them. I might figure out a birdhouse but that would be my limit for now.

I was a Christmas craft show one year, the lady beside me had gourds, baskets, bread baskets, flasks...you name it. They were beautiful! She had used a wood burner on them; southwest designs then stained and sealed somehow. Wowed me for sure!

Hurray! Hurray! Thank you! I will check out the store.
When do you guys start your seeds? I know from last year they take forever to germinate...I would like to have them in the ground by the first of May. Does a heat mat help speed up that process??
Anything else I need to know??

I will remind you when I start mine RRM - we bumbling gals gotta stick together!

Thank you Jo, I appreciate all the help and advice I can get! The one thing I did do right last year was plenty of water, gourds got watered about every day, it is amazing how much water they use.

Unfortunately, all my seeds sprouted but that is all....I had to resort to buying gourds from a local gourd farmer. I have been buying a few of her gourds over the last 10 years, but this last October I bought over $150.00 worth, Mostly birdhouse and small jewelry gourds.

That is for sure. They do use a lot of water. But it is well worth it.

Dang Dorothy, the new home will be nice but lack of gourds sucks! If I get any good ones to grow, maybe I can send you some when they dry, won't be very heavy dry!

That is one of the reasons we bought $150.00 worth of gourds in October...nice and dry, just need cleaning. And it goes without being said..."Never one to look a gift horse in the mouth...." I love interesting snake gourds. I have two at this time and dreaming on how I will decorate them...wand them to look like a "real" snake, Hilarious! Hilarious! That is one of the reasons we bought $150.00 worth of gourds in October and at $2.00 each that is quite a lot....nice and dry, just need cleaning. Now there is a good question! I had a couple last year but they were straight, they got really long but didn't have any real "snake" to them.

I don't know what my supplier does to make then have their unique twists and turns....she may grow them on the ground or put a poll next to them as they grow so that they will grow around it....just a guess.
