Did everyone give up on these shows or are we just trying to nap our way through summer? It is so hot here, I wish I could do the reverse hibernation thing that bears do. It will only get worse from now on and the cool down won't start till October. :(

There aren't very many reality shows on right now, or at least there aren't many of the ones I watch. I gave up on Dance Moms and Dance Moms Miami because each show was exactly like the one before. The Bachelorette is actually admirable this time and the guys aren't total jerks, so there's nothing to laugh at. Duets didn't catch my attention at all.

I got caught up in the AMC dramas and I've been watching Mad Men, The Killing, and the Breaking Bad marathon. I think The Closer is coming back soon on TNT, so I'll watch that one too.

My usual home Cubit has been verrry quiet lately, and because of a swap, 'that plant site' has been more active for me lately. And because of life I have to concentrate on not ''frittering and wasting the hours in an offhand way~ ee~ ay.'' (Sometimes I just want to open Zuma and blow two hours mindlessly..)
My kids are working their way thru Breaking Bad and Parks and Rec seasons. I listen here and there.

I just finished watching all of the Breaking Bad episodes yesterday. I think they put me in a bad mood. I've been very snappish lately, even with the cats, which is perfectly absurd. When they ask to go out and then hesitate after I open the door, I yell at them: "In or out! In or out, damn it!" They're puzzled by my tone, I'm sure.

Depressing books or shows can affect my mood too. Poor cats LOL.

From what I've overheard/ gathered Breaking Bad would seem depressing. Is it?

Try Parks and Rec for humor. Similar to Office. In fact it 'borrows' a lot from The Office.

Someone wrote a book about reality TV and used the phrase Guilty pleasure- I read that in an article . NewYorker maybe?

Breaking Bad is worse than depressing. It's disorienting. The main character starts out as a fairly decent guy making unconventional but understandable choices. As time goes on, he makes increasingly questionable choices and becomes a thoroughly rotten human being. We're all accustomed to sympathizing with a hero, but it's impossible to sympathize with this guy.

Oddly, Parks and Rec followed the opposite pattern. I've been watching it from the start, and the main character started out as a quirky egomaniac with no redeeming qualities, but she has steadily grown more appealing as a heroine.

I first heard the term "guilty pleasures" about 40 years ago, and it was used in reference to junky books that were a joy to read in spite of their many flaws -- inferior literature, but great stories, such as "Gone with the Wind" or, more recently, all of Stephen King's works.

Sally, I can relate. I haven't been watching much TV, either. It occurred to me that most of this long to-do list isn't going to get done unless I actually DO it. Sad It's too blasted hot to get out and garden, so I'm purging the house. Gittin' it gone - and wondering why I accumulated all this stuff in the first place.

Btw, did you get hit by the storm? I saw that Frederick had a lot of damage.

Zuzu, I can't imagine how you watched all the episodes of Breaking Bad. I watched one and was done. And I must have a different sense of humor than most viewers because I can't stand Office and couldn't stomach P&K, either. (Not an Amy P. fan.)

Alma, I watched them all because my own to-do list is very short. Ever since I watched them, I've been advising everyone to avoid watching the show. It's getting negative word-of-mouth from me. I'm still depressed from watching it, and it wasn't the drug culture that bothered me. I've had meth-heads in my own family and there was a halfway house across the street from me a few years ago, so I've already seen my share of horror stories. The awful thing about that show is the decline of a normal human being overcome by the effects of too much money and too much power.

You do have a different sense of humor. I think The Office and Parks and Rec are hilariously funny, laugh-out-loud funny. Did you also dislike Seinfeld?

Zuzu, your observations are interesting. I haven't 'absorbed' much about Breaking Bad by my overhearing so I had no clue about all that.

Alma, let's take an oath and BOTH get all 'this' extra useless crap outta here! Why is it so hard to come to grips with? There must be a strong human urge to accumulate ''possible resources.'' So nice of you to ask; my home in unscathed but yes there's alots of scattered damage all over the region. Mostly would be trees down or tree limbs damaging structures or downing the power lines. It sounds 'mild' compared to tornado areas where houses and businesses get ripped from the earth and shredded- but this is keeping a lot of people busy.

I have to agree with Zuzu- I love The Office and thinks Parks is very funny too, and Seinfeld too.

I did like Seinfeld! Occasionally, they irritated me to bits, but the characters were so well-defined and the plots - when there were any - were funny. At least to me. I was a big fan of Arrested Development and a so-so fan of Larry David's show, though I didn't see much of it. My fave comedy these days is Big Bang Theory. Two Broke Girls is pretty funny, too.

Yes, Alma! The characters on Seinfeld were so irritating, but I loved the show anyway, and Larry David is the most irritating man on earth, but I've enjoyed the episodes I've seen. I canceled HBO as soon as The Sopranos ended, so I haven't seen that many of his shows.

Arrested Development was a gem! Big Bang Theory's still good, even after all these years, but I think my favorite current comedy is Modern Family. I like every branch of that family and I love the way their separate stories are woven together. The Middle and Cougar Town are a couple of other comedies I never miss.

Oh, I forgot Modern Family! I think that one runs neck and neck with BBT. I never watch those other two. I thought Patricia Heaton was good in Everybody Loves Raymond, but as I've learned more and more about her radical RW politics, I can't stand her and won't watch her show. So there! Like I'm sure it makes a bit of difference in the dough she rakes in... . I did watch Cougar Town a few times, but it just didn't hook me. CC's frozen face turns me off. Sometimes, just for laughs, I turn to the Retro channel to see Cheers, Frazier (an all-time best comedy) or the Bob Newhart show. Now those were *funny*!

I agree with your golden oldies. I hope you're including both of Bob Newhart's shows. I loved them both. My list of great old comedies would always include Barney Miller too.

I never saw Green Acres. I didn't have a TV set until my son was born in 1976. He wouldn't let me read when I was nursing him. He'd kick the book out of my hand, so I bought a TV set and started down the road of TV addiction. I don't know how I escaped television in the first 33 years of my life, but it's probably a good thing I did. I wouldn't have accomplished much. Smiling

Isn't it amazingly awful? I don't know who's worse: the children or the parents. Such a waste of time and effort and money, and the only people in the audience are family members. Can't they just have neighborhood parties where they dress up their kids like dolls and cut out the exorbitant costs? They pay thousands of dollars for some of those dresses, travel to other states in some cases, pay people to do the makeup and hair and sometimes for coaching, and all for a tacky crown or trophy that's meaningless to anyone outside the pageant circuit.
