| Is it too early to start decorating or planning for Easter? (It's never too early to start planning for the next holiday or event!) We used to host an Easter egg hunt and brunch on the Saturday before Easter but don't anymore. The kids got older and weren't interested and we live in an area where it's often cold and raining at this time of year and since the egg hunt was outside, it wasn't that much fun in the rain! But when we did it, the adults would go outside and hide all the eggs (which I had filled ahead of time) and then we'd turn the kids out to find them. They did have fun when they were younger, but Easter isn't that exciting of a holiday once they hit their teens. I still make baskets for my kids (and for my sons' girlfriends). Last year was actually the first year we didn't hide them. I'm not sure if my two older sons will be able to come home from college this year, so I might just give them their baskets this weekend when they come home for spring break. The brunch was a potluck. I found some recipes for do ahead casserole-style french toast that was pretty tasty. One of my favorite things that someone brought were these skewers with fruit. They looked and tasted great! |

| I figure that the more work it is to put up the decorations, the sooner before the holiday they can be put up. Thus, I put up the Christmas and Thanksgiving decorations at least three weeks before the holiday, Easter decorations roughly 2 to 3 weeks before, and Valentines decorations a week before. I put up the Easter decorations today. We don't have family out here or kids so we don't do a whole lot, but I have an Easter basket for DH and he gets me some kind of gift. We usually have something special for dinner on Easter. Last year it was ham, but it varies. This is the first of two of these that I am making. They aren't hard but they take some time. | I LOVE your decorating guidelines! I pretty much decorate at the beginning of a holiday month and then leave them up til the end of that month. But someimes I don't even get my decorations up for the smaller holidays, and I should because I usually have only one box of those decorations (valentines, st. pat's). One thing I've noticed is that people like to get in the mood for a holiday before the holiday and then after seem to think the decorations should come down. This is a problem for 4th of July. We have quite a few of those decorations and I want them up for more than a few days! I have company coming this weekend, starting tonight, so am hoping to get some Easter stuff up before they come. Working on getting the house cleaned first, tho! Really nice needlepoint. I used to do quite a bit of that. Stopped once the kids were born and have never gotten back into it. But I still have quite a few unfinished projects in a big box somewhere. So I hope to get back to it. How big are the crosses? Very pretty with the lilies! |

| Thank you. The crosses are about 18 inches long. I learned embroidery when I was around 14 years old. I kind of liked it then but not as much as a lot of other things, so I stopped doing it for years and years. A couple years ago I got a needlecraft catalog in the mail. (I don't really know why I got it.) I get about a million catalogues so I was going to toss it, but decided to look at. There was a tablecloth in there that I decided I'd make for my mom and that got me back into doing needlework again, mostly embroidery. The cross is called plastic canvas. It uses yarn instead of thread and the matrix is a plastic screen kind of thing instead of cloth. I do this stuff when I'm watching t.v. and that makes me feel more productive. My projects have "seen" a lot of games and Investigation Discovery. So anyway, you can always go back to the needlework when your interests or time demands change. | I did some embroidery and and some cross-stitch but did mostly needlepoint. I do know what you're talking about when you say plastic canvas. Probably one of the reasons I got out of it is that I stopped watched tv when I had kids. Not enough time! Now you need cable to see anything and we don't have that (or a dish or any of those), so I mostly watch 'tv' on hulu.com after the fact. I go thru stages. I'll probably get back into it at some time, maybe in my 'retirement' years. Your cross is certainly a very special 'heirloom' type of Easter decoration! |
