Fried Green Tomatoes...

Ever since the 1991 movie "Fried Green Tomatoes" I've wanted to try making these in my own kitchen. Too bad it took me so long, as they are truly delectable!

If you've read any of my recent articles, you've probably figured out that I love tomatoes!  I'll take them in all shapes, forms and varieties. Being a northern Gal though, I had never heard of or tried Fried Green Tomatoes until I lived in the South. I just happened to catch a replay of the 1991 movie "Fried Green Tomatoes" last week and decided it was time to try these in my own kitchen! The results were amazing and I wish I had of tried them sooner!

Keep this recipe in mind at the end of the tomato season when you have an excess of green tomatoes and it's too chilly to ripen them, or just pick the green ones now. 

Ingredients

3 Large Green tomatoes

3/4 cup all purpose flour

1/2 cup seasoned breadcrumbs (or 1/4 cup breadcrumbs/1/4 cup cornmeal)

2 eggs

1/4 cup whole milk or buttermilk

1 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper

Vegetable oil for frying

 

Wash and slice tomatoes about 1/2 inch thick. Discard the end pieces

Whisk the eggs and milk together. Mix together the flour, bread crumbs and salt and pepper on another plate. Dip the tomatoes into the milk and egg mixture. Pat the tomatoes into the flour - cornmeal - breadcrumb mixture and completely coat.

 

Add about 1/2 inch of vegetable oil to the bottom of a large skillet and heat over medium heat. Place tomatoes into the frying pan in batches of 4 or 5, depending on the size of your skillet. Do not crowd the tomatoes, they should not touch each other. When the tomatoes are browned, flip and fry them on the other side. 

Drain on Paper towels to absorb some of the extra oil and Enjoy!!!

Okay...I'm trying to present a nice balanced recipe here...But I can't help but mention - if you really want to go Hog Wild...Fry them in Bacon Fat!
