I have visited Kauai twice and consider it my favorite island. We have also been to Maui and The Big Island.
I am happy to answer questions from my (admittedly) limited experience.
We stayed in a private home rather than a hotel so our experience was probably not typical.Thumb of 2010-09-11/Dutchlady1/4e93b1

Hi Hetty, I will be spending a week in Kauai and a week in Maui next year. I have not been to Kauai before but my mom who is going with me has been a couple of times. I am very excited to go, I have heard wonderful things about it. What was your favorite thing about Kauai? Did you have a favorite place to eat? What part of the island was the private home? Was it a rental or friends home? The condo we will be staying at is in Kapaa, I have no idea which part of the island that is on but I will be doing some research as we get closer to departure Big Grin Is that plumeria from the island?

Hi Patti - lucky you getting to spend two weeks in Hawaii! Yes, the plumeria picture was taken there. There are many mature trees like that on the island.
We were staying (catsitting, actually) at a friend's house in Lihue. (question: where do you go on vacation when you live in Hawaii? Answer: Alaska Smiling )

We had several places to eat that we really liked. There is a casual barbecue place that has excellent barbecue and a fantastic view over the ocean called Scotty's. This is actually IN Kapa'a - so it will not be hard to find. We ate lunch there several times. There is a bike path that runs along the ocean which runs right by Scotty's, we loved biking there.

For a very special evening out, go to The Beachhouse in Poipu, but be sure to make a reservation. I recommend going at sunset.

We loved driving up to the Canyon, going to the beach, riding bikes along the ocean (see above), kayaking, and a very special visit was to the Hindu temple - you have to book this in advance. Kauai is known as the Garden Island so the scenery is gorgeous everywhere. Na Ana Kai Botanical Garden was a must for me and we went there twice.

If you feel like splurging I would recommend the helicopter ride - shop around for a good deal ahead of time. Picture below taken from the Helicopter!

I would definitely recommend buying 'Kauai revealed: the Ultimate Guide to Kauai' - a fabulous and very honest guidebook. It will tell you what to do. We never went anywhere without it (and had the Maui version too).

Feel free to ask more questions.Thumb of 2010-09-11/Dutchlady1/009aa2

I just printed your post and put it in my Kauai folder. I have ordered the Kauai Revealed and I already have the Maui Revealed. Like you, I never went anywhere without that book. How far in advance do you think I should start shopping for the helicopter ride?

I laughed out loud at this: (question: where do you go on vacation when you live in Hawaii? Answer: Alaska Smiling )

Are there kayak rental places on Kauai?

I have read that people kayak Wailua River and hike to Secret Falls, so I am sure that they do have kayak rental places.

Maui

Maui is truly one of the most spiritual places in the world. I love this Island and I am sure that I am not alone. This is a place for anyone interested in Maui whether you have been, plan to go or just want to see what others are saying about it.
