Susan, I'm thinking I could try a few "zone 7" ones planted by a rock or patio ("heat sink" to moderate temps) and mulched well this fall... 'Black & Blue' hasn't come back for me, but maybe one of the other guaranticas would... and hopefully i can get some cuttings going before fall frost and try keeping some over the winter also. Richard had a bunch of overwintering tips for me/us on the previous thread; will have to re-read.

What size are these plants, please?

i have a few darcyii and greggi that have endured zone 6 winters for several years. Ultraviolet and Cherry Queen are 2 I know of for sure. We have dry winters, for the most part. They are planted on a slight slope in clay soil. On some the slope faces north, others it faces south. This year, the wacky weather year, they started blooming with the daffodils. Blinking

winter dryness/drainage is an important element in growing many salvia. but you have them on the NORTH SIDE! wow!
as we said last year many of the salvia exact cold hardiness is not known. richard has made educated guesses only.

anyone that would like to report how your plants from last year did let me know that too. richard likes knowing all that stuff especially if you have a survivor that you were pushing it on. many of these plants..............yall are some of the few people who have ever grown them .............outside california at least i am sure. not a lot of diverse information is even available. if they have a salvia discussion thread over on atp yall oughta compare notes over there too. and i am going to send this link to richard and hope he makes it in from time to time.

This was hard to decide on but here goes:

1 elegans "Honey Melon"
1 greggi Dark Purple
1 guarantica Argentina Skies
1 microphylla San Carlos Festival
1 x jamensis "Devantville"

I'll most likely keep looking up photos and order more. I'm thinking I need a white and a yellow...and maybe a darker blue....crap. Drooling

DMAC me and you man we like the same colors i think. i love all those yellow and orange and pinky salvia. anything with yellow i just love.

you know that yellow salvia you got earlier i hear that that plant is not as strong as most greggii's. and in my own garden it has nothing of the vigor of the others. but i do love that color.

yup--if it's bright I'll most likely love it:lol:
I did lose that yellow one--it limped along in the container for a bit then I just decided it had to sink or swim on its own in the garden and it sunk. Doesn't mean I wouldn't try a different one this time though.

That Devantville and Pat Vlasto are both bright sort of coral/pink colors. I'm looking at that Limelight one too--the flower stem/base (bract?) is lime green and the flowers are blue.

Where are you guys finding info on these salvia? I followed the link to Richard's site but the inventory was from 2008. Is there a page somewhere with descriptions of each salvia, or are you all googling each one?
Once again last month I went over my data allotment and Verizon socked me with a big bill, so I'm starting to watch how many pages I google.
Are you guys just ordering by names that sound pretty or am i missing out on a database somewhere? Blinking
The sooner I order and get them established, the better the odds that they'll survive the winter. Since SUSAN took all the zone 6 ones... Glare
But I'm braver than Susan. I know the zone 7 ones will make it here. Especially since we're not doing winter any more. Hilarious!
