Thank you for the enlightenment. I knew it was good for me, but I didn't know how good.

I'm on a journey to a healthier lifestyle and have been "trying" meditation. I'm not very good at it yet; I feel the need to be in constant motion mentally and physically. (My nickname is the Tazmanian Devil. LOL) So being still and quiet is really hard for me.

I have begun having massages every week and I have to be quiet and still for 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the length of massage. I'm using massage as a preamble to meditation. I'm still not very good at relaxing and being quiet during my massage, but I'm getting better. I'll keep practicing meditation and maybe eventually I can sit still and quiet for more than 10 minutes. LOL It's really hard to keep my mind from wandering to the tasks I need to be doing. But for the health benefits, I really NEED to learn to accomplish this.

Maybe you could enlighten us on some of the techniques to help get us started. What would you advise a Tazmanian Devil to do to be able to sit in peace?

In meditation it helps to not fight the thoughts that drift through your mind.
Do not acknowledge them but just quietly allow them to drift into your mind
and then drift out.

Prior to meditating, it might help to do some breathing exercises. Another
thing that helped me focus in the beginning is:

Put a lighted candle in front of you.
Squint your eyes until only a beam from the candle comes into view.
Just watch that beam of light for as long as is comfortable.

Oh, I like that candle idea. I'll try that the next time. Thanks!

It takes some practice to get the "squint" just right but then
you will see the light beam going right into you. I aim it to
go into my heart area. It was taught to me by someone several
years ago when I was going through four years of classes to get
my counseling license and was very stressed.

I have been meditating since about 1974. I have researched it over the years too. It can truly heal people as well as
prevent stress related illnesses.

What I do is sit comfortably in a chair; I like a recliner, but lying down on a couch is good. However, that makes it easy to just drift off. What I did was pick a word; mine is "one." Don't choose a word that has significance because the word
becomes a way to block out thoughts to a degree. When I reach a meditative state (it takes a while before I reach it;)
I am hardly breathing at all. The breath is very shallow and light. A teacher told me that one goes into the state faster if one imitates the breathing (shallow and light) of deep meditation. That does help me. The meditative state makes me feel that I don't have a body- it's just pure space and peace. At that point time doesn't mean anything. I keep my eyes closed when I meditate so that I "see" a velvety blackness which is most comforting.

Gloria, when I meditate I visualize myself blending into the space
around me, blurring the boundaries of my physical body until I
feel the oneness with the Universe. I also do that at night if I have
trouble falling asleep.

I see colors when I meditate. Do you?

self improvement through the mind

It is obvious that our thinking, our bodies, and our health are often a reflection of our minds. Let's talk.
