I made this outfit recently for my 17 yo. She & her sister are into anime & manga and cosplay. This one is from Axis Powers Hetalia (an anime & manga that is based on axis and allied forces during WWII). The jodhpurs were made from an out of print Vogue pattern that I was able to find online. The jacket (I can't recall the pattern right now) was modified - additional pockets & the pocket "flaps" were added. The jacket and pants were made from linen (thank goodness for 75% off sales!).

Reference pic (note - the tie for her was blue - it changed colors several times in the manga):

Impressive!!

Where will she wear it? I'm a little out of touch with anime, etc. It's been 4 years since I taught high school kids and that's my only reference to it. Can you tell us a little more about it?

You did a great job!!
Love the color.

Thanks! She's worn this outfit several times now (she "debuted" it at AnimeFest in Dallas this past September). Since then she's worn it to a screening of the anime English dub, Axis Powers Hetalia, done by the US licensee; and to a local International Hetalia Day event. She's planning on wearing it to her next anime con this March too.

Her first exposure to manga (a very simple definition: Japanese comics in book form) was at our local library back when she was in junior high (they have events for teens & one of her friends was instrumental in getting the anime club started). We'd watched anime (video) for years without really realizing it (Sailor Moon is actually anime). From there, our experience with it has grown tremendously. Most manga is serialized. She's a very heavy reader so I'm not concerned about manga being her only reading material. She reads a lot of manga on line, in fact Hetalia started as a webcomic when the creator was attending the Parsons School in NYC.

We really lucked out on the color. When I first saw this on the bolt, I thought, that's it! Then I realized it was linen & I thought, Oh, no, I'm not going to buy it. Way too expensive. But it was on sale for 75% off and ended up costing about $15 for 6 yrds.

You got a real bargain and a very happy daughter all at the same time!
Good for you.

What a great story.
She very much resembles the character in the picture.
