I think there are people who are capable of staying with a great healthy diet over the long haul. And then there's people like me. I try. I love food, for the most part. And not necessarily the most healthy kind, either. Things like fried chicken and pizza and hamburgers. I do well staying away from dessert (not my thing, unless it's homemade fruit pie low in sugar and topped with whipped cream), but then succumb to snacks, whatever I can find. I love cheese and Greek yogurt...not the lowfat Greek yogurt, either. I DID find something recently that is good for me, however. Gnu bars...very good stuff full of fiber, low in calories, natural and I love the taste! We order them from the website.

I love all the wrong foods too. Chocolate, ice cream etc. We have ice cream almost every night but John is good about getting me a very small bowl most of the time. His servings had started to grow a little in the past few weeks and I talked to him after my dr. appt. and stressed that, if I am going to have ice cream, it can't be more than a half of a cup. He is getting better.

I never cared for ice cream, cakes, pies but I have some of it now and then. Did not much care for chocolate either but now I do like it if it is dark chocolate. Actually I eat most foods if they are home made but if they are too rich it actually makes me feel ill should I have too much of it. Also, I have never been one that likes eating out.

I always order dry fruit from 'Nuts on Line' that name always makes me smile.....

I wish I didn't like the foods that I like but I do like them. If I deprive myself all is lost because eventually I "cheat". I am much better off having a small serving of those things I wish I didn't like.

Good night all!

Hi all,
I finally managed to get some me time! I have had the two youngest grandchildren staying for the half term break all last week and that is a full time job! Love them to bits but 10 days continuous parenting, when you are out of practice, takes its toll.

I delivered them back home on Monday, which was a 450 mile round trip, and so all I have had the energy for since is restocking the larder and fridge and getting the car through its annual service and 'health check'.

I see nearly everyone is thinking weight reduction. Its a subject I find difficult, if I actually ate cakes, cookies, chocolate, pizza or any of that stuff heaven knows what size I would be. My problem is even though I have a very healthy balanced diet and still look like the back of a bus!

I recently spent 2 years calorie counting and lived on on 800 calories a day plus working like a navvy moving earth and building things for 4 plus hours a day . For the first 12 months I did lose weight - about 1lb a week. After that I was stable for the next 12 months. Didn't lose a thing despite still being rather more than a bit on the large side. I got very peeved with the practice nurse who obviously didn't believe I was sticking to it!!

Then I had to stop the heavy work as I damaged a couple of tendons in the arm and a knee joint and having got very fed up with the whole process, gave it up. I'm just not meant to be slim!

Hi Carol! Great to see you popping in Thumbs up I bet you had a grand time with the grands! I have plans to keep my grandsons over night for a movie night of Ironman DVDs and even though I have kids everyday of the week, the thought of not having a break at the end of the day is already draining me!

Things have been fairly good here. I brought the new bird downstairs a week and a half ago. He is doing pretty good. He doesn't eat a lot of their food but Antigua has taken to feeding him so I'm sure in time he will eat better on his own. They have done this in the past with new additions to the flock also. It's like they instinctively know that the new guy needs some help. He loves his broccoli so that's good.

I've been trying very hard to greatly reduce unhealthy snacking and to monitor portion sizes. I haven't been brave enough to step on the scale just yet though.

A couple of months ago my doctors long time nurse retired. I had an appointment on her last day and she had said she kept checking the schedule every day watching for a few of her favorites and she was happy to see my name on the list that day. She gave me her phone number and told me to give her a call. I finally called her last week and we went out to supper last night (I brought 1/2 of my meal home for DH). I had a great time and said we would have to get together again. She said we should make a regular thing of it so we agreed that the first week of next month we would go out again. I pretty much only get outings with another female when I get together with Jeannie so it was really nice.

I have an easy day today. My two girls are staying home. Their mom just found out she has strep so she has to stay home from work and decided it was best to keep the girl w/her to minimize the spreading, if it isn't already spread here that is. We are both hoping not but only time will tell.

Hope everyone else has been having a good week!

Well, SU and I are done with our 10 day chores/relief milking job. And in 2 weeks I head to NY for a 4 day job, but will be gone a week, with travel logistics figured in.

Looks pretty cruddy out, but may try for a brisk stroll along the road later on, and will call it my cardio. Jeez, I hate cardio............all that ellipting and going nowhere. Big Grin

Hi Coffee Friends. As for dieting, I believe that a person's genetic makeup, and body type make a lot of difference when it comes to burning calories and using energy. Some people seem to gain weight by looking at pictures of food! Others find shedding a few pounds quite easy. Even in the world of 4 legged animals, some are easy keepers, and others are hard keepers. I saw that a lot when doing endurance riding, some horses wouldn't hold their weight through a ride, others doing the same distance at about the same rate of speed looked just the same as when the day began.

Nice to see you again, Okus. Yes, kids can be quite tiring when a person isn't used to them anymore. I never was much of a kid person, having been raised alone by my grandparents who lived a quite secluded life. Things like that can have a long lasting effect.
Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most.

Nice to see you posting Carol but I must say 800 calories sounds like a starvation diet, wonder what you were allowed to eat ?.
As much as I loved my grandchildren I was not their baby sitter unless it was sort of an emergency, I always felt after having 4 children of my own it was their turn to take care of theirs. This was my MIL's believe also.

High strung people do not gain weight as easely as calm ones, I never belonged in the latter categoty.

That's like my younger sister. She got the only real "fat gene" in the family. Has done the extreme diets, but it's too hard on her and she doesn't lose enough weight. Lately, I've heard cinnamon helps, but am wary, since quantities of cassia cinnamon (almost all cinnamon in U.S. is) can have an effect like a blood thinner...too dangerous. I might try the Ceylon kind of cinnamon in caps. I have some anyway. And I'd still have to change my diet and exercise more, since my goal is to be healthier. DH's health is pretty bad and I have to be able to physically do what I have to do every day...neither one of us wants him in a nursing home.

Love babysitting the grands...........gramma can do fun things with them and learning things.........we bake, we roll our cookie dough, we cut dough, we sprinkle dough, we add eggs and whisk them in the waffle batter...........and it is a learning thing for them too.

I know what you are saying Anna, I did that with my children and they did the same thing with theirs.

When I do have my grandkids (which isn't as often as I'd like), it is because I have asked to have them. It exhausts me, but I love it at the same time.

Glad to hear that the Newbie is settling in well Sheri, and that the others are welcoming him to the flock.

Yes we had a great time with the grands . I discovered DH has hidden talents too; we went 10 pin bowling and he started with two strikes and a spare!! His score was more than double any of the rest of us!! We also learned they have an oldies discount afternoon on Thursdays so we may go again on our own.

Visiting the owl sanctuary was fascinating, I didn't appreciate just how many different varieties of owl there are. The grands were thrilled to be allowed to have one of the Eagle Owls perch on their arm, particularly when they discovered he had been in the Harry Potter films - no it wasn't Hedwig, just one of the other mail carriers!

We also took them horse riding, they have both been nagging for lessons for a while so we thought we would find out if they really would like to learn or just liked the idea in theory. They both did very well, so I have probably given their parents an extra expense and will be unpopular!!

We had them for the school break because D-in-Law wanted to go back to Texas and visit her family, but taking the children as well is very expensive and cash is tight at the moment. Of course, their Dad had to work and they live over 200 miles away so it wasn't possible to just do a day care. Its not just mentally and physically tiring having them 24/7 for 10 days - with the parents totally out of reach, its a huge responsibility as well and that is tiring in its own right.

I actually got into the garden for an hour yesterday, the daffodils are just showing colour so Spring must be coming. There is a mountain of tidying up to do though and I think we lost quite a few plants in the big freeze. It was one of our coldest winters ever and we had snow early, before things had gone dormant, that lasted for weeks too. I hope we get a good summer as a reward for survival Smiling

Carol
