Having spoken to my friendly local garage (not the dealership) - it will cost about $500 to fix and I'd lose that on premiums if I claimed so we won't be using the insurance.
They also suggested they could do a cheaper fix and save doing the full one till we want to sell the car, then have a respray. Its silver metallic so the colour won't match a touch up job, but as I'm not planning selling provided the dent is gone and it won't rust a bit of difference in the colour won't matter for now and it will save me $300.

The dealership want a mint to do it - but as its out of warranty I can go where I like and the local guy is good - so guess where I'm going!

My only consolation is that his car must be a mess - he missed my lights but he didn't miss his own cos I found a piece of tail light glass sitting on top of my tyre!
