This cubit is for those that love spice. Hot, mild, or allspice. I make my own spices with the vegetables that we grow. It sure is a fun hobby, and gives the wife and I something to do together.
Let me know what spices you like and how to make them.
Thanks---

I'm glad to see this forum! Since I was born & raised in New Orleans, we have our favorite spices & seasonings that we use all the time, especially the holy trinity: onions, bell peppers, celery. I've been experimenting with other spices on my own, especially different peppers that I grow. This year, I'll try making some smoked chipotle. I've always grown a lot of parsley & cilantro, and my Mom has a huge bay tree that has delicious leaves.

I'm looking for other spices & seasonings that I can grow myself.

How wonderful to see a cubit for spices and what a wonderful idea. I use spices all the time whilst cooking and even have my search engine on Directv set to list programs on spices.
My favorite spice is saffron as it makes rice so much better because I'm not fond of rice.
I'm looking forward to the information people will share.

Kevin, Have you ever tried growing your own saffron? I tried some last fall, but living in hot, humid New Orleans, I didn't get a lot of them. I'll see what happens this fall.

Hello Jo-Ann, no, I've never tried growing any. I'd wind up growing the autumn kind and poison myself. I'll just have to save up a year and by mine at the store. I guess I could by them for my zone 7 but just haven't taken the time.
Do keep up on the work on your site as it's most interesting. Lee

JoAnn and Kevin, Bitbit was talking about growing the saffron crocus in zone 7 over in her Urban Gardening Cubit. To me the devil would be the tedious work of harvesting those little threads. Would drive me crazy. Blinking

Stormy, the idea sound great and I'd do it if my vision were good enough. No telling what I'd pick off. Blinking

Kevin- Give it time, the cubit is relatively new. I have posted on other sites to check us out, hopefully it will attract a few.

Thanks for joining . I look forward to sharing spice recipes and other spice topics later.

Spices are what you can dry or use fresh from your garden...or someone else's garden. :-) I have chives ready for drying, we are in Iowa; slow start, cold, windy!! Herbs?? Big plus for spices. I have cilantro, mint, but haven't grown any others. I usually end up buying or trading what I don't grow.... I have tons of hot and mild peppers growing, recently put outside to harden off.Never attempted to grow garlic. Anybody?

Let me know any herbs you grow.......

I love the orange mint! Hope you planted it in a container, it is pretty aggressive but most mint is. What kind of garlic did you plant? I am growing Oregon Blue, Music and Elephant Garlic. We plant garlic in the fall here so mine has been in the ground for sometime now and should be ready in July.

Patti, I will have to look tomorrow on the garlic. Yes, I did plant the mint in a container, thanks! The other herb that I tried for the first time this year is a cinnamon basil.

I haven't grown cinnamon basil. Is it called that because of the taste or the color?

I'm not sure Patti. It has leaves that are both brown and purple. I haven't tasted it yet.

Hello everyone, I haven't used many spices in my dishes so far but recently after visiting an Indian retaurant I have become a fan of kadai chicken and I have been trying to make it since then. Can anyone help me with the recipe of kadai chicken. Also which is the best spice brand to use? How about Horton Spice Mills, Canada?
