Your favorite opening line or lines from a book.

I looked up a quote to make sure I got it correct, and found there is a page called Wikiquotes!! A whole list of best opening lines. I have to admit, some made me want to read further!

The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed.

The Dark Tower by Stephen King

I don't know why I think it's so good, but it provided such a visual, and I remembered it...

I liked it, too, Susan. Thumbs up

This one really grabbed me...
"From my first breath in this world, all I wanted was a good set of lungs and the air to fill them---given circumstances, you might presume, for an American baby of the twentieth century."

Peace Like a River by Lief Enger

Yeah. It's a great story, if you haven't yet read it. Smiling

Here's another one I like, not so much for it's beauty--it's a utilitarian sort of sentence--but for its honesty....

"In the beginning, human beings created a God who was the First Cause of all things and Ruler of heaven and earth."

Karen Armstrong, The History of God

I do wonder, though, at the paucity of good opening lines in my books... I default to poetry...

"An artifact,
The shards of things
Their hands have held
And used
And laid aside
Remains."

Edith Purevich, from A Gathering of Spirit

I noticed in searching thru my library that there are a number of good opening paragraphs, but--maybe not surprisingly--non-poetry doesn't focus on that opening line so much.

If not the opening line, it sure helps me to have something grab me very soon.

"The men thought they were dying in a fiery plane crash, but it was only a perfect landing at Tan Son Nhut."
Of Rice And Men, Richard Galli

That grabbed me right away and I enjoyed the book too.
