The idea is to turn to page 23 of ANY book, fiction or non-fiction, nearby or in the other room, & tell us the first complete sentence.

"Sister Mary's error might have been noticed by the other nun had not she herself been severely rattled by the Secret Service men in Mrs. Dowling's room, who kept looking at her with growing unease."

Good Omens by Neil Gaiman & Terry Prachett

Now we shall see where this goes...

THat's an intriguing sentence. Sci fi? or medeival. Or western.

I have nonfiction sitting around all over the place.

"As the table indicates, farmers are willing to supply more wheat at a higher price."

It's interesting to mix the two, isn't it?

"Supposing one thinks deeply & looks into one's life & concludes, 'Well, I have no unkindness, no ugly thoughts, no brutality.'"

Really? Who is this deluded person? Rolling my eyes.

Yawn. The only real book next to my chair is a book on Orchids, that I need to finish looking at and give back to my neighbor, lol!

Ah, the trick here is you are not bound by what is next to your chair...wander gleefully about, turn over piles & look under beds...in fact, it doesn't even have to be a book, it could be a magazine. Lessee, here....

And that, my lovelies, is from an article on making a red chile to die for.

THats a simple yet intriguing sentence

"All our family acquaintances have followed the same path: their youth spent trying to make the most of their intelligence, squeezing their studies like a lemon to make sure they'd secure a spot among the elite then the rest of their lives wondering with a flabbergasted look on their faces why all that hopefulness has led to such a vain existence."

Loved that book. Up to the end. Didn't care for the ending, but I'm a romantic at heart. Rolling my eyes.

Speaking of the widow's daughter....

"Or, more commonly, you desire sex when you're not having it, and you suffer until your desire is met."

Sex, Sin, and Zen

And therein lies the plot of half the world's literature. Hilarious!

What else is there? Death,perhaps...

"Pliny the Elder wrote in about 77 AD that the scorpion was a 'dangerous scourge, and has venom like that of a serpent; with the exception that its effects are far more painful, as the person who is stung will linger for three days before death ensues'".

Interestingly he added that the sting was invariably fatal to virgins and nearly always so for matrons(!)

It goes on to say the 90% of the muskets were still loaded, interpreted as showing just how reluctant people are to kill someone when facing them.

I am quite surprised to read that 90 percent number, only because we recently went to Antietem/ (Sharpsburg ) National Park )(Battlefiled) and one museum pice was a rail from the rail fence somewhere on the battlefield- with musket balls embedded every about 10 inches across its length. It gave a visual of just how thick the balls were flying that day.

sorry, movie on cannot to a page 23 till later Big Grin
