Guarding My Heart

| Guarding my heart against all sorts of outside interruptions isn't always the easiest thing to do.....especially when it's those little catch you off guard moments that come out of left field! |
Today I experience once again how much God loves to build me up and how He cares about my every thought. This morning I noticed a Christian group on Facebook that was formed 3 weeks ago and they have thousands and thousands of members. Just yesterday, I had felt all warm and fuzzy that the Trust in the Lord Facebook group had grown to almost 200 members in two months. My vision, when I created the group, was simply to encourage others with a verse and an image each day. I wasn’t aiming for 1 million fans before another group, state or politician. But something happened and I felt competitive. I felt discouraged and I knew my stupid ego was vying for attention. So I went outside to sit on my garden swing and pray that I would guard my heart against feeling like I needed to be in some kind of competition. Today’s verse was especially for me! I asked God to show me if He wanted me to do anything other than what I was already doing. I left my house in expectation of an answer, knowing that God does not send discouragement but encouragement. As I was painting a mural I saw a long time friend who is a member of our group. Laura mentioned (without me even saying anything) that she looks forward to opening her email each day to read the verse. Her daughter Lori agreed. Laura said she doesn't always even look at the image but reads the verse that God has for her that day and so often it’s just what she needed. She told this to me twice in our conversation and I knew it was God's way of letting me know I was doing exactly what He wants me to do.... that numbers aren't important to Him. That my heart is what He wants. I want to guard my heart not just against things that tear me away from the joy of loving God but also against the foolishness of egotistical nonsense. Yep, today's' verse was especially for me! Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. Proverbs 4: 23

Over the past eight years, I've learned that the things that seem so important are fleeting and to trust God completely with my life is what really brings me joy, peace and contentment. I love bringing the written word and images together as a way of reminding us all to lean on God and not ourselves. My favorite verses are Proverbs 3: 5-6, Jeremiah 29:11 and Matthew 6: 25-27."Christ followers shouldn't be stuffy, boring or rude . . . but purposefully embrace life and live like Jesus did: with joy, love and compassion". |
