We only see the American Robins in our area for a few weeks early in the year as they migrate northward. We've had large flocks around for about 2 weeks now and I love hearing them sing!

The Common Grackle's and Red-winged Blackbird's always show up together at this time of year.

A great deal of customers at the bird feeder; mainly juncos, titmice & chickadees. A pair of cardinals around but we mainly get the hen.

Those robins are pretty...now, why can't they come here?
How about this to brighten up my yard after some really dreary weather! The Lesser Goldfinch. Now, I'm thinking...how can this pretty little bird be lesser to any other one?

Here's the link for the co-op we hope to get together:

Linda: I agree ... that is one beautiful bird, I wonder why it is called the "lesser" Goldfinch?

Because the American goldfinch was discovered first?

Because they are the smallest of the 3 American Goldfinches. Isn't Google wonderful? Well, they may be the smallest but they certainly aren't the dullest!

The Great Backyard Birdcount begins today & goes through Mon. You can count 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 days. It's easy. Check it out:

Lucy: Isn't it weird? I've noticed the past two days ... many less birds visiting the feeders! My first thought was it's so warm that many are heading back north (currently 77ยบ here) but then I realized I've only seen a few Blue Jays and Northern Cardinals the past couple of days too. I usually see many of them daily, as they are year round residents.

I know! Only 1 of my 5 painted buntings showed today & 1 of my 3 cardinals & 1 of my umpteen blue jays & mocking birds & only 1 of my humming birds. They have to stay hidden for 3 more days. Big Grin

Tell them the count ends on Sun. Mon they will show up & you can count them. ??? If the same birds show up on different days is it ok to count them again? snow predicted on Mon so perhaps the titmice will come in to be counted, absent today.

As far as I can tell; yes, count the birds again. I think the thinking is that unless birds are banded then you can not be sure they are the very same bird. Plus it is a different day & I'm sure they have some kind of factoring for that.
Ha-ha, I had 4 Turkey Vultures show up ---- guess they wanted to make sure they got counted! Rolling on the floor laughing

Lin, are those hawks & the Eagle that you've been taking photos of lately still hanging around? That could very well be the reason for your lack of seeing your year round residents. Either they're hiding or the pendulum of nature has swung in your area & the birds of prey are knocking down their #'s. We just came off about a 5 or 6 year cycle of that here. The birds of prey just about wiped out everything we had for a few years then they ran out of food & I guess moved on, then it took a few more years for the songbird population to build back up some. It's finally beginning to look more "normal" around here.

Also, have you ever noticed that the female painted buntings like to feed WITH the male cardinals? That's the way it is at my house.
