This is by far the cutest squirrel pic I have ever taken, what do you think?

Oh, how adorable, tmar!

What kind of squirrel is that?

I think they call it a fox squirrel, or grey squirrel, I'll post a pic of an adult. You might not recognize it, but the parent squirrel is barely visible to the left, kinda gives you a better size perspective. That feeder is like 8 feet out our back door.

Oh, I see. I thought that looked like a baby or youngster. I didn't recognize the mother on the left. Sounds like that is the same kind I'm used to. It just looks different because it's a baby. I've actually never seen a baby squirrel. I have a yard full of squirrels but haven't seen any of the babies.

Now that I think of it, I don't recall seeing any pictures of baby squirrels either. I think you got a very special photo op there.

The Delmarva Fox Squirrel is an endangered species only found in protected areas of the Delmarva penninsula. They are chunky, silver-colored squirrels. Here is a shot from last fall.

We were at Blackwater NWR last Saturday, and came across this one that is nearly white!

Karen,

That Delmarva Fox Squirrel is a real cutie. Love the solid gray coat. Good catch getting a photo of one. I'd never heard of this squirrel, so thanks very much for sharing and for letting us know that it is endangered. You never know, someone may see your photo and spare the life of this or another squirrel because of it. Often the things we post online have effects far beyond what we intended.

Is the near white squirrel in the 2nd pic also a Delmarva Fox Squirrel?

Yes, the nearly white one is a DFS!

I agree, and this is why I share the photos I take of wildlife and birds... just for that reason!

Thanks!
