Do you make hand creams sundown? I use to make them along with lotions, but got out of it cause I hated using the preservatives, if I could find a half way non harmful preservative I'd get back into it again.
Kathy, Essential oils, alcohol/tinctures, and vitamin E serve as the only preservatives I use, but you do have to use a lot sometimes. I wrote an article for DG about making Gardener's Hand Cream with a recipe to use. I don't think there are any "rules" against linking to DG stuff, so here goes: http://davesgarden.com/guides/articles/view/1692/
Do you have to refrigerate your creams? how long do they last? I belong to a yahoo group and they all have said things about not leaving your cream/lotions out of the frig when you use more natural types of preservatives, they don't last long and they get rancid quickly. I know that the balms made with no water don't need any kind of preservative. I've also read that any lotion or cream with water in the recipe needs some sort of preservative.
I'd like to make my own lotions for my personal use since we use an organic lotion, it's expensive, and it does have all natural preservatives in it
it has things like camillia extract and calendula extract and lemon peel extract and that's all it uses, or lists, it does say it uses other essential oils.
I'd like to get a few ideas on which natural preservatives I could get a hold of to make my own lotion, good enough to let it sit on t he counter for 6 months . then i'd go back to making lotion for myself.
I'll read over your link,
if you have any ideas, I'd love to make a lemon lotion like the one I have so I don't hve to spend 8.00 per bottle every time I want to buy one.
Kathy, thanks for the kind words about the article. I hope you can read the many responses to it as there were some very smart ideas about preserving the creams. I personally make small batches of creams, use a lot of vitamin E oil, use a pump dispenser (now), and I use my herbal tinctures with alcohol, too! I do keep some of my creams in the fridge in the summer months because they feel so good to use cold, lol.
I use a mixed herbal body oil (from a pump dispenser) after showers that is warmed in a sink of hot water while I'm showering. I realize some folks don't care for oils, but I have never tolerated the creams and lotions very well. I only use creams on my hands.
