Does anyone else enter items into their state fair?

For those who don't, you really should consider it. It is a lot of fun, and you always get some good pointers on improving your technique!

Last year I won third place on a smocked bubble (out of five entries), and fourth place on a crocheted baby outfit (out of eight entries). I am hoping to improve this year!

Judging should not be based on a judge's personal likes but on the quality of the work done. Shame on her! I love it...

Eventually it always seems to come down to personal likes & dislikes... I've shown horses & dogs & it's the same there.

I hope to enter something in the county fair next year... it's a tiny fair, & I want to support it. I've just learned, so I don't feel up to the State Fair yet... the stuff is so amazing there!

Jay, if you can make it, I strongly urge you to go to the actual judging. You learn so much about what they are looking for, even when watching someone else's entry get judged.

I was a little late for the judging on Thursday (torrential rains slowed down traffic), so I missed what the judge actually said about my piece. A nice lady watching the judging just told me what she remembered. Often the difference between 1st and 2nd place is splitting hairs. I did hear a comment by one of the judges about how much pet hair had come along for the ride on one of the pieces she was judging! Rolling on the floor laughing

Rolling on the floor laughing No, no, it was just mis-identified, I'm sure. It wasn't acrylic, it WAS spun dog hair & the acrylic came along for the ride! Rolling on the floor laughing

There's a woman nearby who will spin up your dog's fur for you. I've seen some pieces she's knit from Great Pyr fur... beautiful. Of course, you dasn't stand in the rain.... Hilarious!

'Course, that's true with a lot of wool, too. Smiling

Oh very funny Jay! Wonder what they would do with a piece made of dog hair??

The piece I saw was a beautifully sophisticated sweater, an evening out sweater. She had dyed the fur the softest golden yellow and I would have loved to have been able to buy it.
