Deejay didn't want to be left out! He's on my desk helping me type these posts, though I think he'll be asleep in no time if I let him stay behind this box.

Sounds like a bunch of characters you have there, Bit! I recall rats do like chocolate and can be found hanging around Willie Wonka's chocolate factory... or what that Hershey's? Hilarious! Look forward to pics of the tea party!

Hilarious! love hearing about your rats.
But, um, don't they pee everywhere? Or do they learn to stop? My son had two rats and that was the one deterrent to play with them. Otherwise, like the gals at the shop said, very tolerant of handling.

Cute ratties! I miss having ratties...I'm allergic to them. I had one named Cocoa who followed me around like a puppy, came when I called him, rolled over for belly rubs, and rode on my shoulder. He and his buddies were crazy about Yogurt Drops.
All they'd do is see the container and they would reach out of the cage with their little hands, ready to grab one. And they grabbed them with gusto!
I hate that their lives are so short. Mine lived to be four years old before they started developing ugly cancers, and I had them euthanized. Broke my heart!

Critter stories are often uplifting and tear jerking at the same time.
Except for parrots, who live long enough to grieve our own passing, we tend to outlive our pets and other animal friends.
But knowing that we will shouldn't stop us from sharing all the love in the meantime!
It enriches both parties.

I almost got some rats and parakeets during my catless time.
I was still planing on it when I had the bunnies only.

But fate intervened and a cat appeared who needed a hand and a safe home, so now I'm a catmom again.

I think I NEED cats in the house, All others are welcome, but I NEED the cats.

Christine, it'll be a pea party, not a tea party Hilarious! My rats aren't politically active Whistling

Sally, most rats won't actually pee outside the cage unless they're out too long to hold it. They do scent mark, though, leaving tiny droplets to mark territory. These boys are neutered so they don't mark at all, but it's something I've gotten used to as a rat owner. I have a couple of hoodies that I only wear for rat time so that I don't get spots on my regular clothes. It's also good to have protection against their sharp little nails, and they love the big pocket and hood, which I call their mobile hammocks.

Renee, their lifespans are indeed too short. Four years is very unusual, most domestic rats live 2 - 3 years, and in the wild they average about six months. I mourn every one's passing, but I also know how many are in the shelters around here, so I see that as them making room for me to help another rat. I have enough cage space in my house for about 30 rats, but I prefer to keep about half a dozen so that I can lavish them all with attention.

Your Cocoa sounds like he was a total sweetheart Lovey dubby I've never taught my rats their names, but they all learn to come when I "call" them by shaking the treat jar Hilarious! When I let them out to play, that's the easiest way to get them back in the cage - just shake the jar and watch them all come running.

I once lost sight of "Mrs. Rattie" and she was missing for days. I put food and water out under the couch where I last saw her, and it disappeared, but I never saw her...until one night while I was sleeping.
I felt a tug on my blanket, and when I reached down to investigate, I felt a warm, furry, and finally captured, Mrs. R. Hilarious!

Found these photos while digging around for BCA.

If anything was needed to quash any impulses to get a cat anyway, these three did it. Sticking tongue out My employer recycles electronics. Picked up a load of palletized stuff one summer Friday in 2008. Normally, the pallets wouldn't have been torn down for a week or two. For some reason, the boss decided to start on a few of them the very next day. Got to the bottom of one and, in a box buried under keyboards and such, were three frightened and hungry kittens. Of course, EVERYONE had to come see and ooh and ahhh. Put them in a bathroom and the other manager (who had three cats at home) kept watch with me over the weekend. Come Monday afternoon, I put them in a smaller box and carried us all to my vet's office. She has late Monday hours and takes walkins. And, of course again, that was the night her staff overbooked her, she had three emergencies, and walkins come last. Me 'n kitties waited three solid hours in an exam room. These photos were taken right before the vet and techs came in, when the babies had relaxed enough to snooze. (Vet said they were about three and a half weeks old.)

The building we were in had been divided up at one time for lease offices and smack in the middle of the warehouse space was an airconditioned, toiletted office setup with a glass door. Guess where the cats migrated to? And guess who was THE biggest worrier about keeping them cool enough through the Texas summer? The big gruff volatile noisy self-centered boss who wouldn't let his daughters have cats or dogs (trust me, good reasons for that at the time). The orange boy went home with an employee at seven weeks. The two sisters took all of seven months to place. Finally went to a home together where they now have the entire family wrapped around their furry little paws. But, in the meantime, guess who took turns with the other manager to care for the babies for that seven months? Uh-huh. And guess who stuffed up and wheezed and watered at the eyes after a few minutes in CompanyCatWorld? Blinking So...sigh...no kitties for me.

My very own Three Dog Night. They all used to snuggle against my legs on cold nights when I was sitting up reading.

Debra, I'm the same way with cats Crying Like them well enough, but my head stuffs up just being in a house where one lives, so definitely none for me.

Those kittens sure are adorable, though! Such a sad story about how you found them, but it all worked out in the end when they got happy families to go home with Thumbs up

Too many cats!!
Haven't posted here in a gazillion years, just posted in the Rose Cubits in the Our Companions a few updates w/my own critters (mainly my new additions). Since I posted here last, I lost my Freyja (tortishell), Osiris (white long hair), & Wolfgang (golden retriever). It was rather depressing at home for a while.
