A lot of people have cats and rats. Usually, the cat can be trained to leave the rats alone as long as they're caged. And the cage can be set up where it's hard for the cat to reach as well.

All of my rats come from shelters or rescues. If you're ever really interested, I can try to set you up with a rescue group in your area.

You can use ratwire or screen mesh for the outside to keep the cats out.

Yeah, I have a 2 story bunny pen in my head made of lumber and hardware cloth. It's only 36" high, to fit under the window, so I've been dreaming up a parakeet cage for on top of it. Might as well take it to the ceiling and add ratties! I want the ratties to ride on my shoulder, though, so I'd have to lock up the cat.
Decisions, decisions.
I tried a couple of usernames and have finally settled on:

crittergarden.

That's it, no more changes. I'm done. I will be crittergarden here, on Cubits, and when I renew my Dave's Garden subscription on Noveber 4, I'll be crittergarden over there, too. DONE!

I let my rats have shoulder time when the dog's around - as long as they stay on the shoulder, they're fine. Of course, the initial shoulder training is probably best done behind a closed door.

Yes - my cat is TWO, still practicing the art of the ambush, and has recently earned the nickname "Fang". Best if he's closed in the bedroom or somewhere.....

A Thanksgiving chicka!
How sweet.

HEY - I have a question for ya.
I know people in Pittsburgh keep chickens - there was even a tour "Chicks in the Hood" last summer that I just missed.
I can't figure out how to get in touch with any of the coopers though, and I have a big question.
WHAT ABOUT WINTER???????
I fear they just slaughter them before we go down below zero and that will NOT work for me.
I want them as pets, for the eggs.
Do YOU know how to keep chickens happy in zone 5????
Decisions, decisions.

My chickens are happy. they are in my front yard and get to scratch and look for all the bugs they want. Mine eats birdfeed but you can get regular chicken feed or even laying mess. You do not need a Rooster to get eggs, the hens lay them without a rooster. The rooster is merely to breed to make more chickens.
That would have been neat to see the "chicks in da hood" Oh, yes they will do o.k. in zone 5. If you build them a pen, best thing is to make them a southern or eastern faceing house. they got to have a certain number of hours of daylight to lay. You can always"google" to get information on chickens.
I'll see what I can find for you. If you have a Tractor Supply or Farm store they should have books on chickens.
I don't butcher mine either. They just die of old age.....

Critter, check out http://www.backyardchickens.com/ They have tons of info on keeping chickens, even in urban areas. I haven't kept chickens of my own, but I know they can be kept overwinter in most climates - you just need to insulate their coop, or heat it in the very coldest areas - I think the chickens themselves are OK below freezing, but you'll have to keep their water liquid all the time.

And since this is the photo thread, here's Mr. Muffin on Christmas morning:
