So, what tools would a beginner need to start building miniatures?

1) a glue gun that has low and high settings
2) paint brushes
3) scissors
4)sand paper, lots and lots! coarse grit to fine grit
5) a pencil Big Grin
6) white glue
7) sanding block, or old scraps of wood that you can wrap sandpaper on to sand in tight spaces
8)a big flat table just for crafting
9) lots n lots of newspaper so you dont ruin table
10) aluminum foil. I use it for under the glue gun, but also for paint trays while painting, or glue trays :o) very handy!
11) popsicle sticks
12) rubber bands to hold stuff together while drying

lol...I think I have a glue gun but that's it so far..... I have a big table but I have to use it to eat on ... and I'd need to get everything else ....hey there's an idea for birthday and X-mas for ya sis... Hilarious!

haha, I just might send you home with some of my junk here Smiling and noone needs a big old table to eat at, big tables are for crafts...just get some of those T.V. trays for eating! Big Grin Rolling on the floor laughing

Well I tkink you will also need.

small wall paper roller
small veneer roller
soldering iron
glass cutter
clamps
scroll saw
small miter saw
hole punch
tack hammer
razor knife
and a few more things I can't think of at the moment.

Straight and Curved Needle Nose Pliers w/ smooth faces (big hands)
Tweezers (or long nails)
Magnifying Glass or Lighted Mag Loop
Pins (to make nails), Nippers to cut Pins
A craft vise is nice and very cheap.
Pin Vise (again very cheap) to hold small small drill bits

Some kind of Tool Box or Organizing Box
GOOD Lighting!
Comfy Chair

Thanks Ric! yes patience is a must! I have enough to work on 1 inch scales, but definitely not enough to work on the model ships DH builds! LOL!

and Lighting lots n lots of good lighting!

I actually did a few ships.
Not the tiny miniatures but fairly small.
Took weeks and most of that was the rigging.
Tying hundreds of little knots w/ thread! My hands hurt for weeks more! lol!

That is exactly what DH was doing when I heard all those...'new words'... Whistling
He was working on the cutaway of the USS Constitution and the rigging on that is eye-crossing to say the least! He had to stop working on it and put it away for now. I know he was using 2 pair of tweezers to tie some of those knots...ugh! He has worked on that particular model off and on for over 10 yrs. Right now it is set aside and he is working on the riverboat instead. Smiling
