Yes, I bet the salt does real harm in conditions like that! Every year I plant bulbs out by the mailbox but I commented to my friend that they neither thrive well nor naturalize. She answered that it was why she put hers in tubs and brought them up every year because all winter the city salts the roads and plow to the curb at least a high as the mailbox. She's likely right. I still put them in the ground this year, I just put in cheaper ones. Some will make it. Setting tubs of expensive bulbs out on the road didn't appeal to me. First I'd have to buy the right tubs or barrels and secondly, with all the teens driving to the HS up my road, there is potential for some shanagans (even without a 'TAKE ME' sign on the containers), and finally because I have so much to do in fall that dragging them back up is just another chore. Some will pop up and send out some happiness anyway.
