A H. imperialis growing outside was looking horrible....so I dug it up and it really looked BAD! I cut off dead stuff, and planted it in orchidbark/perlite at a 45deg. angle...kept it damp...not wet. About a month later...this is what it looked like:
I trimmed off more dead root...and was careful to leave the fresh new roots in tact...repotted it up....
This is what totally dead root looks like... Really, nothing viable there!!!!
I'll carefully nurture this until it puts out new fresh growth and when I can, I'll cut it to root. I have a feeling that this old piece of root could croak at the slightest discomfort...but will be able to save it with the new growth.
I pulled the Adlrichii and Helwigiana I told you had lost all their leaves and the roots seem to be nice and white yet. I'm going to keep watering and talking to them and maybe they sprout new leaves. I'm not real hopeful expecially with the Helwigiana because it seems like hollow sections between bark (don't think there is bark on Hoya) and the stem. The Aldrichii may come back or I may need to try again. Its roots look okay too.

Coralee...hmmmm strange about their roots being so healthy. I wouldn't water them T OO much but I might try making a terrarium type rig with maybe clear plastic bag....

A customer returned a dead H.imperialis to us many years ago. Ted was in Borneo, so I stuck the dead thing in water. Didn't know what else to do with it. About 7 years later its a blooming fool. plant is huge. I think Carol has seen it. We just called it returned imperialis and the label is still on it so never say die.

My H. pottsii from Vietnam - a very succulent plant - began to die back and the leaves all looked like deflated footballs...so I cut it up and put the base end (which had NOthing healthy on it) in a small bowl of water. Water is exactly what killed it (too much)! Checked it a few weeks later and....
Big surprise!!! I had nothing to lose and am happy with the success! I potted it up in Growstones and am looking forward to success! This has been a funny plant: It has grown beautifully for me and the flowers are wonderful...and everytime I have made a cutting from it it has died and I've had to give it CPR!!! I think Growstones will help a lot - and I will never cut it again!!!!!

Found a long vine of H. chlorantha that must have been torn off somehow...it had been on the ground for a while...so I put it in a pot with a mix of hydroton/growstones (love the mix) and wound it around...
Yesterday I potted up 5 small plants from the sections that had rooted...
I have been collecting, studying and selling hoyas for about 10 years. This Cubit is about growing hoyas, and about the hoyas I have to sell. I welcome any and all hoya lovers, whether you want to buy or not. Hooked on Hoyas is another great Hoya sight
