Here is the UK Relatives forum.

Many of you will end up back in the UK at some point in your research, and its even harder in a country you don't know than it is at home to know where and how to look.

This forum is intended to be the place to ask for help and swap information.

I live in the UK and have access to resources that may be more illusive if you do not. I'm also incredibly nosey and just love digging in the past so if I can help I will.

In the summer my garden takes up a lot of my time so I may take a few days to reply, but I will try very hard not to ignore anybody!!

I have posted some hints and tips on researcing UK records in a separate thread. Like most lists of FAQs it doesn't cover all the possibilities, just the most frequent problems so if you don't find the answer to your question there please ask.

Goodness, we have a ton of rellies in the UK, Carol, so I just might call on you!

My husband's family is from Todmorden/Halifax area and from around Burnley. My own tree takes me back to Ireland, Somerset, Brecon and one unknown, but thought to be from around Lincoln, if I remember correctly.

One tip for newcomers: watch the border changes! My husband was born in Todmorden, Yorkshire, which is now in Lancashire - I believe it has changed "sides" several times over the years. My Welsh ancestors also lived in Monmouthshire (sometimes considered England) for a time, so I have to keep that in mind, too.

Hi Kathleen!

It's great to see you here! I hope you'll enter your family's names in the database. If you have any problems, please just let us know.

I'm sure Carol is probably sleeping right now. She's been a treasure for digging up info on quite a few of our folks.

Take care and see you soon,
Janet

Hi Kathleen and welcome to Ancestry. I assume the name of your husbands family is Kaper? I had a quick look to see what there was and found:-

in 1841 there were only 13 individuals in the UK with that surname. A couple, Frances and Matthew, both aged about 45 in Eastrington, Yorkshire.
A 40 year old Sarah on her own in Leeds, Yorkshire
A John, aged 35 and his wife Mary Ann aged 30, in South Kilvington, Yorkshire with Daughters- Sarah and Elizabeth
A 25 year old tailor called James living in Liverpool, Lancashire but not born in Lancashire
A Mary Ann aged 30 with a 3 year old son George living in Somerset, but having checked the original I would have read the name as Hooper not Kaper
plus
Two in Midlothian Scotland, but they could be mis-transcriptions for Keffer or Keafer of which there are several in the area.

and thats all!! So it should be fairly easy to trace your line

By the 1891 there were 3 different Charles in various parts of Yorkshire, and in 1881 there was a 28 year old George from Germany on a boat called the Lincoln in Caistor Lincolnshire with a family called Blae also from Germany who were farmers. Incidentally one of my own ancestors was on a different boat in Caistor at the same time!!

By 1901 there were 27 individuals called Kaper, so if you can come up with some first names and ages an an approximate date I can probably pin yours down.

It is likely that the real origins are in the Netherlands and the name - De Kuyper- a large number of Dutch came to England in the 17th century to drain our fenlands. They designed and built the network of dykes and pumping stations that manage huge areas of Lincolnshire, Yorkshire and Cambridgeshire. The same technical skills were also used later to build the navigable canals which opened up trade routes across the country. Quite a few place names in those areas indicate they have Dutch origins too. We were very good at Anglicizing these foreign names!!

Oops, sorry Carol, didn't mean to mislead you. KaperC is my DG name and I attached it here for clarity - that didn't work, did it? LOL

My husband's name is Cooper - I'll list the surnames associated later, but suffice to say if you throw a rock in that area, you will hit one of them. Finding the right ones is the problem.

Will come back and enter some data as soon as I can, but no time right now. Thanks for the welcome.

Coper might be a slightly larger search!! But with a first name and approximate date it should be OK.
