Happy Birthday!!! Birthdays are strange things. When we are young, we absolutely can’t wait for them! And when we are older, we pretend they don’t happen. I remember when I couldn’t wait to be 10, double digits, you know! And then it was 13, so I could be a teen and 16, so I could drive, then 21 so I could vote. Each birthday was a gift, a treasure that led to some new and wonderful adventure. I’m not sure when that excitement ended, somewhere around the middle years, I guess. I can assure you that the excitement does return. With every birthday now I wake up and think, “Oh wow! I made it to another year!” At this age, everyday is a treasure, a new adventure. Birthdays are cause for celebrations, no matter the age. It wasn’t always like this. Back in the very oldest days, birthdays weren’t celebrated because there was no calendar to keep track of them. According to historians, the very earliest birthday celebrations were mainly to ward off evil spirits. It was feared that evil spirits were particularly attracted to people on their birthdays. To protect them, the birthday person would be visited by friends and family who would bring good thoughts and best wishes. It was a long time before religious groups allowed a birthday celebration; they considered it to be a pagan practice. And Birthday Cakes. Did you know that back in the days of old, the early Greeks and Romans worshipped the gods of the skies and only the wealthy planned birthday celebrations. Of course, only the wealthy could afford them. They baked breads and cakes and adorned them with either one large candle or many small ones placed right in the middle of the cake. The candles were lit and the cake was taken outside so that the gods could see the light and would become more receptive to the prayers that were offered. That’s when birthday cakes came in to the picture. I’m truly glad that time altered those old beliefs and practices, because there’s nothing more fun than Happy Birthday greetings among friends and family who care. I surely was surprised when so many friends helped me celebrate my birthday right here on Cubits just a couple of weeks ago. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that birthday. Now we have a new Birthday Cubit and we’d like to celebrate your birthday, too. In order to do that, we need to know your special date. You can tell us privately in a Cmail if you'd like to be included, or you can tell us right here in the threads that follow this article. At the beginning of each new week, we’ll post a list of upcoming birthdays using this same article format. Following each announcement, you’ll be able to celebrate not only your birthday, but also that of all your Cubit friends by sending them greetings in the threads. We encourage you to please consider one thing, we can only accept your own birth date. Surprises are not always a good thing, so if you send us a date, make sure it’s your own. While you are at it, include your anniversary, too.
