Big thing here is organic matter... we don't generally experience mineral deficiencies if there is enough organic matter, which gets burned up pretty fast in our hot & dry.

Got one bed all cleaned up, composted, watered & next I have to put the black plastic on it to warm it up for melons.

Tried sprinkling the next bed I finished w/sugar & watering it in, let's see if it ends up w/more earthworms in it in a week. The taste-off.... Hurray!

It's all about choices.
You ever try covering the ground with cardboard? I usually put some version of animal poop in the soil, water in sugar or molassas and cover it with cardboard. Worms LOVE the glue in the cardboard and shortly it breaks down, leaving yummy organic matter (to say nothing of the worm poop).... ?

I've got tons of construction plastic left over from building project, so that what I use. It warms the soil better. And cardboard tends to catch the wind more.

Carol.... I'm doing fine. My garden is fine. NM is a very different climate than Hawaii, OK? Just leave it already. Blinking

I was just letting folks know what I was trying here, not fishing for advice or more ideas.

Something went into the GH & chewed thru my row cover & dined on the chard that was coming back... it's OK, but I'm not happy about feeding the local rodents. Probably a bunny (so technically not rodent but lagomorph)... bad bunny, didn't even leave any chocolate eggs! Angry
