It's all about choices.
I always plant seeds too close together...and I let them all come up and gradually cut the 'extras' away when they are still small and use them in salads. Chard also sends out VERY deep roots and need good deep beds or soil. When mine aren't deep enough the chard grows out of the ground on stalks, like kale.... I find they grow better if they are given room....
