I really was torn as to what I was going to use as the very first plant! I mean the first should be spectacular, right?! Something that everyone would love to grow in their garden too! See, I realize that not everyone has the same passion for herbs, or species plants that I do.. or wild edibles!! After pondering, getting sidetracked & chatting on some other cubits, making a nice hot cup of toasted dandelion root tea; and while in the kitchen I went ahead and finished cleaning and bagging up the seeds from the Yoeme basil seed-heads that were sitting behind the sink.... I made my choice! The Rose, Rosa sp I would love to have some roses in the garden, some that are fragrant, old fashioned roses, with big beautiful rose hips that I can harvest after the first frost. ![]() image by taters55 Roses are a nice addition to the cottage garden, or an informal ornamental hedge. And they're an important plant in herbal medicine. Rose-hip syrup is a tried and tested tonic, and a source of Vitamin C. Rose-scented oils, made by steeping rose petals in boiling sesame oil has been used for a very long time! For a great companion to keep the mildew away, and help keep your roses healthy, plant some garlic around your rose bush. ![]() image by Katg The old species roses are most notedly used in medicine; R. alba, R. canina ~ the dog rose, R. x damascena ~ the damask rose, R. eglanteria ~ eglantine sweet briar, R. gallica var. officinalis, and R. rugosa. Besides being an excellent source of Vitamin C, rose hips of the dog rose are made into a syrup used in herbal medicine to treat coughs, colds, stomach troubles, diarrhea, and scurvy. Preparations from other species of roses are used for stomach ailments, and to trat depression, sore throats, skin conditions, urinary dysfunction, chronic diarrhea, and menstrual problems. The essential oil is used in aromatherapy and the dried flowers are almost always included in potpourri mixtures. ![]() image by MaryE btw, I found all of the rose images on the Playpen of Graphics, free images & can be found in the database here: http://cubits.org/PlaypenGraphics/ I will be adding more info as I find it during the week. Also, if there is something you would like to add, please do. This is the week to learn all we can about the rose. Also if you have some recipes for rosewater, or jelly, or whatever, please add it ![]() FAITH over fear! |
