I really think it spreads from seeds - maybe with help from the birds? It seems worse, but that's probably all it is. The seeds must be viable for a long time however, as eight or more years later I'm still pulling baby plants out of the veggie garden and I haven't allowed one to set seed out there since the first one.

Boneset is of the same family as Joe-pye, I think; but not nearly as showy.

This is (wild) Joe-pye in the middle of this grouping.

In this pix the boneset is the too tall green clump blocking your view of the little footbridge.

They certainly enjoy the same soil conditions though!
