The real story to this quilt is in the old wool blanket that grandma covered with it. She told me when she gave me this (I was around 15) that the blanket inside was over 100 years old. It is a really ugly thing; she said it was hand stuffed with farm wool. My dad confirmed that he used the same blanket when he was a kid, he died 3 years ago and was 71. His story always was that it was so cold, the wool blanket was used on top and always had frost on it in the mornings. Now that story I believe, daddy was raised poor and it was the era of the depression so I am sure it is true.
