We enjoy breeding new dahlias!
Hillcrest Duncan Edwards The jury is still out on this one. I talked to a famous British exhibitor about it(not anybody on this forum) and he was not high on it. It is not a real tall grower and needs extra care to coax out a good flower. However, where are all of the really nice red ones? There are very few. Red is a hard color to breed. Until something better comes along it will have to do.

Spartacus I wish I had the good stock that I purchased about 5 years ago and then lost by stupidity( failure to dig the clump). It is unbelievable if you have good stock.

New Reds
HH Samurai Lost all my stock
AC Kuntz A very vigorous grower and fairly nice blooms. Worth growing.
Bodacious Hard to find good stock but good if you have good stock
HH Clydesdale Huge flowers but not a very nice shade of red and it fades too.
HH Big Red Really nice huge red flowers that do not fade. It is far better than the competitors in it's class.
Taratahi Ruby Typical grow and fall over waterlily but the flowers can be nice. It's seedling Mak's Royal Ruby is easier to grow and flowers just as nice or nicer.
I am still high on River's Rosebud as it is a tall grower and pure, non fading red. I should try to find it and grow it.

Yeah if my tubers keep in giving Duncan Edwards another try , it does need a bit of extra tying and is rather short but when the blooms are good they are quite nice .
My HH Shogun made only like two small tubers for some odd reason and they were accidentally frozen with my huge clump of Icarus so I thought I would give Samurai a whirl .
Think I have some Caproz Jerry Garcia tubers but it had a tendency to show bright green centers .
HH Clydesdale is coming almost strictly for hopeful reproduction purposes ( wanting genetics from some very large dahlia )

My stock of Spartacus is pretty good ( quite vigorous ) , everyone loved it but sometimes the blooms could be oblong or football shaped , our Bohemian Spartacus did the same thing .

Red is a difficult color to breed. This seedling from 2015 certainly had deep, intense red color. It seems to have informal decorative form and if it is in either the BB or B class for red, there would not be much show competition.

Mm that is just the right size for a nice landscape bush or cuts . I really like that shade of red .
I simply did not have enough red or white last year and a few reds were not invited back and a couple are on the bubble so we are bringing in several to try as I have some trade possibilities still floating around out there .

I may grow Pam Howden in tomato cages this year , should I do the same with Taratahi Ruby ?

...crazy enough to grow dahlias in
FYI...HC Duncan Edwards held its form really well in the heat here last year in a season where 100 degree temps produced some crazy looking blooms on other varieties. The color fading issue was not a problem if cut before fully open and brought indoors....nice deep blooms.

I grew Taratahi Ruby last year and had it staked only. It didn't seem to need that much support to me. I didn't care for it too much; I didn't like the shade of red. Did not realize a nice true red is hard to find.

I liked Taratahi Ruby. It bloomed well and won at the shows.

We are working on a good cut flower waterlily or two here. One was very promising and then did not do real well in our record breaking hot weather. The other one took the heat and was better so maybe it will win the race.

Name for the red waterlily? The one that is in competition with this one is called Ruby Tuesday. I wanted to call the other one Ruby Wednesday but it was not approved by the higher authority. I really want Ruby in the name as it is a red color and a woman's name. I am going to ask for Ruby Mae next. We will see.

My favorite red from last year was Aitara Rufus. It's possible I have already put a photo of this on the red thread; but I don't have time now to check :) I believe it was recently re-classed from semi-cactus to straight cactus which gives it less competition It fades a bit when it's hot; but not much. It has fantastic form and a really nice saturated bright red color. It's one that caught my eye at shows enough times that I decided I needed to try. It was a bit tough to find a tuber of it; but I notice that now there are a few vendors offering it.
I took these with my camera phone that takes nice photos; but rarely gets red right. One goal for next season is to get my better camera out to the field for reds.

Favorite new red from last year was AC Riley. Smaller than AC Koontz, and a prolific bloomer. Also had Bloomquist Scott B, Ukraine Free, and Darksider, which were also very nice.
