Still waiting on a bloom from mine, but mine are just starting to take off... Salish Dahlias |

Those are two of my favorites, Kim. My Nick Sr. is taking his time, but Knee Deep has already bloomed. It's my first year growing it and I love it ! Em in NY Dahlias -- the gift that keeps on giving! |

Nick Sr takes about a week to open. But it is so nice and deep when it's done! We had a small rain shower last night. I noticed this morning that there was some color in the garden, despite temps in the 90s. Good thing, because the Wyoming County Fair starts on Saturday, the Bath fair is on Tuesday, and the second round of the Wyoming County Fair is next Wednesday. That's a lot of demand for dahlias in this weather. The dahlia show at the Erie County Fair was sad. After all that work they did to increase the number of classes, only to be sabotaged by Mother Nature. ![]() ![]() These are the entire entries of the AA and A classes. ![]() |

I am surprised how fairs want the dahlias exhibited. They seem to be paranoid that the flower has a stem and usually want clear glass containers so they can see the stem. I guess they must figure that people "add" stems to the flowers and then hide them in the vase. Glass is forbidden at many dahlia shows as it can beak and injure people. Also, wedges and in this case plastic wrap to hold the flower into the container is rather tacky in my opinion. At the National Show in New York, they used Oasis foam to hold the flower in the container. It works very well but is a bit expensive. I understand that many clubs provide the Oasis for free.. Red Hat I received this from Annie last year, and don't think I have mislabeled it. Last year it looked like this - some flatter petals, some furled petals ![]() this year - not a single furled petal ![]() Does anyone else grow this? does it go back and forth? Dahlia Barn and Lynch Creek label it as an ID, but the pics at both sites look like a cactus |

A dahlia can sport to where there are two different forms in the same bloom. I do not believe that it is a very "stable" sport however. We like to place a sign on our porch that says: We are in the garden. Really, we are always in the garden. |

The Erie County Fair was judged under National Garden Club rules. Their ball game, their rules. Bubble wrap does not work as well as wedges for stageing, it is not rigid enough and takes more time. Most of the dahlia shows in our area provide containers and oasis along with wedges. There is also a mix of clear containers and opaque green ones. |

I posted a response in the show section. We like to place a sign on our porch that says: We are in the garden. Really, we are always in the garden. |

"Does anyone else grow this? does it go back and forth?" I grew Red Hat for several years, and noticed the furling on occasion, too. I just figured it was weather-related, and didn't think much about it. Great durable tubers, with vast quantities. I found that I rarely ever cut it, and it didn't excite me in the garden, so I stopped growing it. CC |

http://cdn1.bigcommerce.com/server1700/2e13b/products/237/im... This one is a fully double orchid dahlia considered a very rare form. We like to place a sign on our porch that says: We are in the garden. Really, we are always in the garden. |

Looks like a red Valley Porcupine to me... The petals are furled up very tightly on both of these. Do you think they will create a new form code? http://lobaughsdahlias.com/catalog/view/Valley Porcupine SOL... CC |
|

The term Double Orchid is in use but is not recognized by the ADS. Rivers Dahlias has been working on them and most of them are classified as novelties, although some are listed as stellars. The trait is quite apparent if you examine the way the florets roll. Yes, Valley Porcupine has this trait and perhaps could be called a "formal decorative" double orchid. . Will the ADS recognize the form? In a way, I hope not as there are too many forms already. We like to place a sign on our porch that says: We are in the garden. Really, we are always in the garden. |

Your lips are like a southern lily red, Wet with the soft rain-kisses of the night, In which the brown bee buries deep its head, When still the dawn's a silver sea of light. I can relate to the southern part! Nice poem for the color red. "What is a weed?" asked Peppa Pig. "A weed is a cheeky plant growing in the wrong place!" replied Grandpa Pig. |

![]() red seedling ![]() I pasted a small color swatch at the center of several of the red colors as that would be how we would do it in the field. I would say it matches chips 22 and 23 about the same. I might vote for 22 as parts of the larger swatch in the middle has some slightly darker areas. Was daydreaming at work today about all the red waterlilies I'm trying and growing again this season . Looks like HH Black Widow will be back HH RPT , HH Ruby Tuesday , Maks Royal Ruby , Taratahi Ruby and it seems like one more . Hard to beat a nice red WL |

A perfect day for red! I am never quite sure whether Angel's of 7A has a good enough form to breed form it, but it is the only other red one that comes to my mind. Salish Dahlias |
