Red Velvet is the first of the modern WLs that came out of Australia. Remember the story of the search for it's breeder who had moved into the outback and no longer grew dahlias They were able to deliver an award for the flower to the elderly former dahlia breeder.

How is the color red doing in the world of cut flowers? It is a difficult color to breed and many people seem to appreciate a pure red dahlia. But does that translate to cut flower sales?
2015 red seedling that shows some promise.

Well, everyone here wants red and orange and blue everything because of the connection with local college colors (UK, WKU, Vols), so red and orange were very popular last year for bouquets at work, with red leading in preference over orange. Of course blue would have totally dominated had there been a true royal blue dahlia, but I think that would have been the case for all of us.
We'll see how it goes with bouquets for sale....
I have Bloomquist Quill, Red Hat, Cornel, and a few others to test the waters with.

I've enjoyed growing it, and the customers seemed to like it too.
It was from Evie, at Alpha Dahlias. Wondering if I still have it, as I transfer reds to the back yard with faded name tags.
Reds did not do well here until we were really into fall weather, then they did great. Kind of a short season of interest for them though... Small ones did better then large ones earlier in the season. I can almost always sell HH Rudolphs and Ali Oops in mixed bouquets.
I didn't have one person come into my dahlia garden to choose their own flowers that didn't want me to cut Colonel Winkie (firsts pick even though open) or Spartan. Everyone seemed to like that one.
The designers like deep red sometimes here. Bright red is ok at farmer's markets but the designers are not interested. Bright red cactus types? Not so much...
Doesn't matter to me. I reserve the right to grow at least some varieties just because I like them.
I have her but she is darker for me...She was darker in the park when she was in the trial garden also. I like her. Actually, she was sent as a bonus with my order and I was happy to get her!
I just had my first picking from Crazy4Iesha. She is prolific! With our heat wave some of the flowers are more bronzy then I remember them being but they look great with the newer darker ones. Its very nice and I will be using it in arrangements this weekend.
Does anyone have Dana Iris? I think I have traded it to a few of you over the years. I lost mine last year in the winter of neglect. It was my favorite red for a long time. It isn't listed on Dahlia Addict and I don't get any vendors when I google.
Hollyhill Scarlet Dream
Aitara Rufus
They are very similar red flowers. Aitara Rufus is a larger flower. They both have similar values for red and green but HH Scarlet Dream has more blue. This Aitara Rufus was grown under shade cloth and the HH Scarlet Dream was in mostly sun but just a bit of tree shade. When we grew Aitara Rufus many years ago it faded in the sun in our garden.

I am really looking forward to HH Scarlet Dreams! With that and HH Diablo I should be set for any desire for bright red! And then I have all the m-balls etc to set them off...
Margaret was not happy with the name Scarlet Dream and says she wants a different name. We have lots time to work on that. I am probably going to release it in the UK before here in the USA, I am going to send some tubers to a show person there.
